Sunday saloon closing debated at Athena council

At a Monday Athena city council meeting Rev. Ed Baker led a petition urging enforcement of the Sunday closing law. The council warned the saloon manager to resign or the license would be revoked. Officials debated legal action, while Mayor Taylor defended his policies and urged local action rather than outside suits.

Daring Break From McNeil's Island Prison

About midnight Tuesday eight inmates escaped from the federal prison at McNeil's Island Tacoma after slicing through cell walls and roof leading to the roof escape. They initially fled to the government launch Irma which failed, then used two rowboats to head for shore before daybreak. Four posses pursue the escapees as U S Marshal Hopkins awaits location reports to marshal the main force.

County Wins Ellis Judgment in O R N Tax Suit

Umatilla county prevailed in the O R N tax dispute after two years of litigation. Supreme Court sustained Circuit Judge W R Ellis in upholding the assessment against the Oregon, Washington and Northern company, boosting county revenue by about 25 000 annually and potentially over 100 000 for 1903 and 1904 combined.
