Gleanings from Weston and Milton detail visits, deaths, and local notes. Miss Lillie McMorris visits Grandma Munro in Meacham while J M Wise prep for Willamette valley trip. H O Hill dies in Trail British Columbia. Ralph Lave defeats Doo Read in a street race. Milton reports births, school moves, a new flour mill, and a survey trip by Marion Rees in July.
The United States Civil Service Commission lists July 27 and 28 as exam dates for positions in the surveyor general, register and receiver offices. Candidates can test in Oregon cities Astoria La Grande Lakeview Portland and Roseburg or any city with a competent board.
The report describes a camping accident near McDuff Springs where a young woman fell from a wagon after her dress snagged on the vehicle. She suffered a broken blood vessel, a dislocated knee, and a fractured hip while a nurse aid became paralyzed. Recovery chances are stated as about even. The notice mentions two impounded horses and an impending sale at Athena’s city pound on June 14, 1898. The Dayton Courier notes the First National Bank of Waitsburg will liquidate. Merchants Bank of Waitsburg to be formed with Levi Ankeny. Dissolution of Owen and Thompson blacksmith shop in Athena is announced with J. Thompson taking over.
A prospectus for the Agnes Gold Mining Company of Tuolomne County California shows 150 000 capital stock at one dollar each. O W Hollis and Charles Cleve are noted officers with Cleve as secretary and a San Francisco home office at 125 King Street. The Agnes mine on the East Lode promises ore valued from 15 to 200 per ton, with quoted averages of 20 to 25 per ton. shares offered at 100 each, payable 10 cents on subscription and 6 cents per month until paid.
A humorous tale about a granger who buys a fancy incubator to improve farming but underestimates the risk. He hides it in a wood house and follows directions, yet a thunderous explosion destroys eggs and chickens. The mishap ends with a wary comment that the old hen remains reliable.
