A. B. McEwen’s Hillsdale farm near Athena produced Bluestem wheat that won first prize at the world’s fair. McEwen notes years of high yields, with 40 bushels per acre on average and 50 bu per acre two years ago. He farms 820 acres of Bluestem this year and plans for a large crop.
At Pendleton and Salem the Oregon legislature failed to name a president of the senate or speaker of the house on fifty five ballots. Kuykendall led early in the senate race with Carter and Miller also in contention. After an all day session and a later evening recapitulation, Democrats shifted five votes to Smith of Umatilla, but no winner emerged.
Hermann of Oregon appears in the House amid indictment tied to Oregon land frauds alongside Senator Mitchell and others. Mitchell plans non-appearance on Senate floor until indicated. Interior Secretary Hitchcock removes J. T. Bridges and Roseburg land office receiver James H. Booth from office.
