A county courthouse levy failed as 1338 voted for the measure and 2002 against it in a 3340 ballot turnout. Pendleton supported 773 to 9328 against while outside Pendleton most precincts rejected the proposal. Athena Weston Adams Gibbon Helix all voted against with small local variances. The official county tally follows.
A man rushed from his burning Bear Creek farmhouse Sunday morning to reach his three year old child trapped inside. The structure burned completely, and none of its contents could be saved.
Weston Leader notes a total $800 to buy the old toll road to secure more federal aid for the Weston Elgin road. Umatilla and Union counties contribute $200 each, while remaining $400 comes from Walla Walla $100 Milton Freewater $100 Weston $50 and Elgin $150.

About seventy five members attended the Columbia Christian Endeavor Rally at the First Christian church basement with guests from Helix Pendleton Freewater Milton and other areas. A social feed followed by songs and a strong address by Paul Brown emphasized Y P F E union work and urged attendance at the State Convention and a consecrated Christian life. Juanita Crawford and Effie Ritchie presided. the home society contributed well making it a happy profitable gathering.

Margaret Lee resigns from Carlo Montana schools to teach fifth and sixth grades in Athena taking the place of Mrs Rominger who left at semester’s end. Miss Lee is a graduate of Athena high school and Cheney Normal school. She has many friends in Athena and vicinity glad to learn of her position in her home school.
The Athena team from Laurence Pinkerton's Christian church class defeated Milton Christian church Sunday school players 14 to 12 in Milton last Friday. Athena lineup includes Kenny Rogers Walter Singer Leo Geissel Jack Miller Aaron Douglas Till Stone Carl Ball and Gale Zerba.

Entertaining at the McIntyre home Monday evening were Mr. and Mrs. A A McIntyre and Mr. and Mrs. A W Logsdon. Pinkerton duo won high score and Miller pair took consolation. Refreshments followed.

Mayor Ben F. Hill of Walla Walla dies at 9 a m Sunday after a long bout of ill health following a stroke during a heated campaign. Funeral from First Presbyterian Church and burial in Masonic cemetery with rites by Blue Mountain lodge. acting mayor Robert Carey and Commissioner Grova Cockerly to name successor. Hill born April 21 1879 in Marysville Iowa lived in Pendleton and Walla Walla since 1908 leaving two daughters and several relatives.

An icy road near Saxe station Sunday evening caused a chain of crashes. Pendleton attorney A Cooley’s car skidded off the pavement and hit the embankment. Several vehicles followed, causing a multi car smashup with no serious injuries reported.
Work is under way to reorganize shelving for grocery stock at the Red & White store on Main and Third streets. The new Red & White arrangement will use tables and remove counters to improve equipment throughout the store.
