Suicide in Athens City Jail Shocks Community
Dan Avery, in a delirious drunken state, killed himself in the Athens city jail by slashing his throat with a broken whisky glass after being taken into custody by Officer Gholson. Earlier he had been Hallucinating of pursuers and had attempted self harm, first slicing his left wrist. Coroner Folsom ordered removal to Miller's parlors with no inquest. An earlier attempt left him with a fatal throat wound and a broken bottle found in bedding. A vigil awaited relatives or Redmen affiliations. The day included a surprise gathering at the Johnson home with twenty one guests and a candy pull in a February snowstorm.

Normal students punished for public dance violation
A few young men from the Normal attended a public dance in violation of school rules. The president suspended them for one day last Monday. The mischief grew as they advertised the punishment by dangling tin cans from their coats on red handkerchiefs, drawing attention to themselves.
Death of Clarence LaBrasche at Walla Walla hospital
Clarence LaBrasche died after a prolonged illness in Walla Walla following a galling attack and surgical operation. Born March 5 1886 near Athena Oregon he led the LaBrasche orchestra with his brother Henry and was a popular athlete. He leaves a wife and son and was buried in Athena cemetery after a 2:30 p.m. funeral at the M E church conducted by Rev. Geo T Lis. Also noted are horse thefts at an Adams county ranch and East Oregon Normal School politics featuring A Barrett’s bid for re election with backing from eastern Oregon normal supporters.

Mrs Beale Dead In Walla Walla After Operation
Mrs Frank J Beale died in Walla Walla Sunday after tumor removal surgery at a city hospital. Her remains arrived in Athena Monday and services were held at the M 4 church at 2 pm with Rev Harper of Milton Presbyterian officiating and interment in Athena cemetery. She was beloved by many in Athena where she and her family had long resided before moving to a farm north of town. She was born Etta Stancell in Ohio February 27 1862 and married Frank J Beale September 18 1884. Surviving are her husband two children a son Lester who preceded her in death and a daughter with the father, plus three sisters and one brother.

Broshup the Walla Walla Merchant's Handicap winner and her mate Agrippina, famed Northwest racers, will visit the McBride stable Sunday. The mare, nearing prime, has built speed and consistency, with home-track success and a strong showing in major events. They wintered in Boise City and will train in Walla Walla before racing.

Coffin Bought Twice Before Bereaved Husband
The wife of Jim Pond, a noted Umatilla Indian and interporter, died after a long illness. The funeral occurred on the reservation, and Pond had purchased a coffin in Pendleton in anticipation, only to have it returned by undertakers, then bought again after her death.
