Hugh McLean died near four oclock Wednesday morning in Pendleton from stomach cancer after months of illness. Born in Ontario in 1864, he moved from a farm west of Athena to Portland in 1908, later investing in property. A lifelong bachelor with a wide circle of friends, he was a K P member and cousin to John Bell. General services were held in the Christian church with interment in Weston cemetery.

Lost Horse in the Umatilla at Thorn Hollow Crossing
One McBride livery horse drowned in the Umatilla river after crossing at Thorn Hollow. Driver Tom Gilkey and a telegraph lineman narrowly escaped as the team fell and were dragged downstream. A log trapped the horse, the boat swam free, and the horse was lost. The incident, blamed on current and a fallen tree, prompted a telegraph to Mr Mobtide and a later return to town by Gilkey.
