Masked intruder murders attorney in Walla Walla
John W. Brooks, a Walla Walla attorney born 1870, was shot to death at 5 30 by a masked man during a card game at his home. Gertrude Burshaw witnessed the incident. Authorities say motive and enemies unknown. Brooks had defended liquor violators and moved to Walla Walla in 1893 after practice in Ashville, North Carolina.

Tragic double death in Toppenish husband kills wife then himself
Mrs. Frank Williams died after being shot by her husband who then killed himself in Toppenish Washington. Williams lured her to their cellar and shot her in the abdomen then drank strychnine and died. She survived by five children. eldest 17, youngest 4. Her maiden name was Bellinger daughter of the late Gus Cornoyer. Remains brought to Pendleton for interment.

Nehemiah McDonnald, a veteran Indian fighter and early Walla Walla Valley settler, died by gunshot in his log cabin near Fruitdale. A bachelor who fractured his collarbone recently, he had refused medical care and had expressed intent to die if he became helpless. Born January 24 1849 in Illinois, he traveled west with his parents in 1865 and helped establish the valley.

Children Drown In A Columbia Slough
A heartbreaking tragedy occurred across the river from Umatilla on the Washington side of the Columbia where 7 year old Wolfton and 5 year old Tiny Wilson drowned in an ice covered slough Sunday afternoon. They had crossed by ferry with their father Clyde Wilson after Sunday school and wandered to skate on the slough. Searchers found the children waist deep in ice as darkness fell, their faces in the water and hands gripping broken ice, sides by side.
