Wife of Pioneer Minister Dead at 72 in Athena
Mrs. Mary A. Koontz died at her home in Athena last Saturday after a lingering illness at age 72 years and seven days. Funeral services were led by Rev. Le Corune, chaplain of the Walla Walla penitentiary, at 2 PM Monday. Born near Wheeling West Virginia on August 12 1839 she married minister WM J Koontz at 16. The Koontz family moved from Ohio to Washington and in 1896 settled in Athena where Mr Koontz died early in his pastorate. Twelve children were born, eight survive: William A Kennewick Wash L H Pasco Wash Amelia Tomlinson Oakland Calif Rev Bracken E Moscow Idaho J L California Fred Edward Athena and Mrs Jocelyn Roberte Dayton Wash.
