Meeting for a Fair in Athena Sept 1921 plan reviewed

Harvest progress prompts Athena Agricultural and Livestock Fair Association to push ahead with plans for a September fair. Mrs Foss visits cities and sightings with Mrs Metzgar

Mrs Foss, a guest of Mrs Killa Metzgar, arrived after the drowning of a young man in company with Metzgar’s daughter. She enjoyed her visit and toured Victoria, Bremerton, Yakima area and other sites. The Yakima buggy, tied up at Commercial Livery, was recovered along the jetty by Harry McBride.

Ezra Meeker Journeys Old Oregon Trail in Prairie Schooner

Ezra Meeker of Puyallup Washington retraced his 54 year old trail starting January 29 1906 driving a prairie schooner drawn by oxen. He reached Indianapolis June 5 1907 covering 2680 miles and spurred public interest in preserving the old route with markers. He planned to visit Oyster Bay and Washington to press for turning the trail into a proper roadway.

CATTLE THIEVES ACTIVE IN IDAHO OUTBREAKS AND LOCAL EVENTS

A Lewiston dispatch reports 190 cattle stolen south of the Salmon river with the band believed driven into Lewiston country. Nez Perce county had a prior raid of 135 head into the Blue mountains of Oregon. Authorities suspect an organized band operating near the upper Snake river valley. Freewater hosts Peach Day on August 28 with fruits and peaches on display, music by the College Place band, and remarks by state and federal figures. Attendance nears 300 for a local stage production of Jeese James with lively crowd.

Harvest Field Reports Strong Wheat Yields Around Town

Local harvest notes record 55 to 60 bushels per acre in several fields north of town. M L Watte on the Zimmerman place and A J Wagner report 80 and 28 acre yields, while John Walker and M M Jobna place report around 50 bushels per acre. Weather has been ideal this week and a constant wagon flow to warehouses begins.

Wheat stories in Portland reveal high yields across Oregon

In an Oregon Daily Journal interview with prominent Umatilla county men, wheat yields are bragged from 80 to 100 bushels per acre. Figures include Thomas J. Kirk at 6 bushels per acre on an 80 acre tract near Athena, and Lowell Rogers with Louis Rothrock at 65 bushels near Mastland.

Walters elected to Wheat Club amid farm stock concerns

Judge Ellia proposed Walters election to the wheat club and it passed unanimously. Charter members spoke on wheat crops and potatoes while Weaton farmers opposed warehouse storage price hikes threatening to build own warehouses if the advance is not rescinded.

Bannister's Many Runaways Threaten McRee Combine Ahead

John Bannister, driver of the McRee combine, experiences multiple runaway incidents. A horse span broke loose while hitching, damaging the machine and prompting calls to reduce the number of horses. The repeated breakaways suggest Bannister may still contend if runaway rates drop.

Stamp Mill Installed At Present Need Mine

Houser, a leading mining man, installed a 10 stamp mill on the Present Need mine after purchasing the property from BP F Morey of Portland. He organized a corporation with 1,000,000 shares, par $1. Stamps to be alerted next week on a rich era from the property. The vein has a history of ups and downs with earlier gold extraction and plans to revive operations.
