At a Hempstead mass meeting aimed at petitioning the governor to deploy rangers to enforce local option, Congressman John M. Pinckney and four others were killed and several wounded. A hasty gunfight ensued as Brown supporters clashed with Pinckney allies. authorities expect ranger deployment.
Federal officers acting under Washington orders opened a campaign against lottery operations in San Francisco. U S marshals secret service and post office raided local Honduras and Mexican lottery agencies and detained many employees while seizing papers and tickets as evidence.
The Portland Daily Journal notes new mining laws from the last legislature go into effect this week.
