First National Takes Weston Bank in Athena Merger

Weston Farmers Bank is taken over by The First National Bank of Athena after weeks of negotiations. Weston officers remain temporarily, stockholders meet April 23 to confirm. deposits are guaranteed, loans partly transferred, and hopes rise for a Weston branch in the future. Local leaders urge $50,000 in new deposits to sustain a strong, independent bank for the agricultural town.

Death of Mrs. King in Caldwell Idaho

Mrs. John King, formerly of this city, died last Wednesday in Caldwell Idaho after a short illness while visiting relatives in Athena during a trip from the Willamette valley to Caldwell to establish a home.

County Dairy Herds Are Free From Tuberculosis

Umatilla County dairy cattle tested for tuberculosis since December 1 1927 show 861 head on 106 farms with 4 condemned and 4 doubtful. Tests led by Pendleton County Agent and Dr W E Thistlewaite from the Bureau of Animal Husbandry note a very favorable condition and disease elimination in the county.

Finger Mash Accident Injures Local Student

Curtis Duffield a high school student mashed his forefinger while helping load a tree onto a truck. The injury occurred when his finger was caught between the tree and the truck bed. Dr. Sharp treated the injured finger.

Pioneer O M Richmond and Joe Lewis Die in Walla Walla

Two former Weston area residents died this week and were buried in Walla Walla. O M Richmond age 68 died Monday night at his daughter’s home near State Line after a long farming career in Illinois Oregon and Washington. Funeral services were held in Walla Walla yesterday. Joseph A Lewis died after a surgical operation at his Walla Walla home and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery after services held Wednesday.

Miss Ringel Leads OSU Home Economics Field Trip

Elaa Ringel of Athena led a party of Oregon State College home economics students on the annual field trip to Portland. The group, including junior and senior girls, studied practical phases of their vocations at various sites such as Oregon City Woolen Mills Willamette Paper Mills and Portland packing firms. They inspected markets and the dining car service of a railroad.
