Armistice Day Parade Opens Atchison Activity Day

Hundreds braved a biting wind as Atchison held its Armistice day parade along Commercial street. Missouri Pacific Booster Club float won first prize of 5 dollars, followed by Red & White stores float for second and Murphy Major Sloan post float for third. Prizes also went to Robert Lutz for best decorated bicycle and Jack Wolters for best decorated Shetland pony.

Armistice Day events highlight liberty and leaders

Kansas Congressman A B Guyer spoke at Memorial hall as Atchison observed Armistice Day with a two minute silence. He tied personal liberty to American constitutional values and cited Teutonic roots, urging leadership and spiritual aim for boys. Also recapped were community notices from jail, church events, and local dances.

Legion Auxiliary Scores Success At Banquet

The Armistice eve banquet of American Legion Fileming Jackson Seever post No 6 at the Byram hotel drew 125 members and guests. Toastmaster LaVerne Stucker led a program with speeches by state and local leaders, a welcome by Miss Anna Hayes, and community singing. Prizes were awarded at bridge tables and flowers were sent to the sick post chaplain afterward.

Clothes Stolen From National Cleaners In North Fifth Street

A thief entered through a rear window of the National Cleaners at 120 North Fifth Street last night and stole clothing valued at more than 350 dollars. The loot included men’s suits overcoats and women’s dresses from patrons of the company run by Charles Lentz and his son Frank. The break in was discovered when the shop opened this morning and police are pursuing clues and circulating descriptions. A similar robbery occurred in Hiawatha at a general dry goods store reported to police headquarters.

Atchison County Returns Highlight Roosevelt Victory

Franklin D. Roosevelt carried Atchison County by 921 votes, with 5,625 for Roosevelt and 4,704 for Hoover. George McGill won the U S Senate race in the county by 320 over Ben S. Struck by car and killed in Atchison on Eighth Street

John Schweingruber 75 died after being struck by motor car driven by B S Cummings Missouri Pacific engineer at Eighth and Commercial streets. He died from a fractured skull after arriving at Atchison hospital. Inquest planned. funeral set for 2 30 pm at Richards residence Mt Vernon cemetery. Survivors include widow Foster daughter and three half brothers.

Driver Held After Death Of Girl 15

Norma Young a 15 year old high school girl was fatally injured Thursday while walking on a highway in Elwood. She died shortly after at St Joseph hospital from internal injuries. Carl Chandler 52 of Shubert Neb is held in Troy jail on reckless driving charges with a $1000 bond. He was driving west when Police say he struck the girl’s party and fled. The report also details local 4-H club officers, a buggy accident injuring Mr and Mrs Wallace, and various community notes.

Andy Clark Wins Atchison County Clerk Race By 64 Votes

Democrat Andy Clark defeated incumbent J R Gilman in Atchison County by 64 votes as ballots from the last precinct put Clark at 4 944 to 4 880. The tally followed a tight contest that kept the outcome in doubt until counting finished.
