Atchison Haas foreclosure scheme leaves investors at risk
Investigators probe Philip M. Haas real estate and loan transactions from Holton Kansas after his death by self inflicted gunshot. The scheme involved selling second and third mortgages as firsts and using nonrecorded liens to skim interest. Lawyers fear hundreds of thousands in losses across Atchison as many clients face unpaid balances. Estimates suggest up to 75 to 80 percent of losses may be salvageable through records, with many details still unresolved.
