Road Change Costs Money In Atchison County

An unafficial estimate places road work between Omaha Junction and the Fourteenth street viaduct at about $10,000 spent before work halted by the state highway commission. With funds tight, county clerk J. R. Gilman says the county cannot proceed and the state owes the county gasoline tax for January through March, likely covering overdrafts in the road fund. The city of Atchison cannot help financially, as it has little gasoline tax money and would bear half the cost only for a short 200 foot segment. The paper notes broader financial strains under the new highway law and critiques for the state to extend the road into Harmony Garden.

Highway Improvement Delayed for Harmony Garden Route

No proposals were made by the state highway commission to fund or plan improvements on the Harmony Garden to Omaha Junction road. County clerk J R Gilman said the county has no money for the project, which would connect with the Omaha Junction to Waggrner Hill route now being upgraded. Governor Reed asked for cost estimates and halted work on the new route, while local taxpayers petitioned for investigation of misallocated funds and bridge projects at Omaha Junction. An eight grade diplomas ceremony followed at St Benedict's with 24 graduates and a formal address from Father Abbot Martin.
