M P Jackline, an Atchison painter and inventor, claims a new submarine escape valve can free imprisoned sailors within an hour regardless of sea conditions. His device, with a special cage, supports ascent from underwater and is before the submarine board in Washington after passing construction review.

Walter Dick Koenig 16 died of spinal meningitis at Atchison hospital leading Nortonville to declare a two week quarantine. The town cancels the two day picnic and carnival, closes churches schools theater and library, bans public gatherings, and urges strict enforcement to prevent spread. Koenig, a Nortonville High sophomore, lived with his parents W C and (Mrs) Koenig and had three brothers and four sisters. Funeral set for tomorrow afternoon. private.
James S. Martin former Muscotah Record editor testified in an inquisition about local liquor law violations. He said he knew of no violations near Muscotah, denied sales or drinking, noted a slip of the tongue about the county attorney’s office, and offered to relay any information he might hear of infractions.
J. Artez, 21, a member of the Philip Dazzo section gang, died when dragged 800 feet by a Missouri Pacific locomotive near the Shannon depot. He was last seen at 9 PM and buried in Oak Hill cemetery after Coroner George Harcuff examined the scene. An inquest may be held.
State and county cuts reduce the overall 1929 combined tax rate to 35.00 per thousand from 35.14 last year, with city levy lowered to 14.50 and state to 2.10 while county falls to 6.30. The school board increases its levy to 12.179 per thousand, lifting school funding by about 22,000 over 1928. Overall local tax outlay for 1929 totals roughly 596,346 for state city county and schools.

Joe Kuhlbrook a 52 year old Buchanan county farmer shot himself last night in the yard of his former wife Mrs Goldie Kuhlbrook four miles south of Rushville on the St Joe highway The note found on him suggests motive tied to their separation His body was found this morning by N A Shearer Coroner Mays of St Joe said no inquest will be held The deceased born 1876 lived near Rushville and was known at the Atchison municipal market He is survived by a brother and three sisters Funeral arrangements have not been made
