Republicans Lead in the Primaries Quiet Local Vote

Primary elections were held last week with light turnout and little public interest. In Lee county Ashton voted about one third of its strength, while statewide Republican wins included Robert R. Philips for sheriff and John E. Moyer for treasurer. Democrats contested several state offices. turnout across precincts shows modest totals with official results listed. A separate notice announces fruit tree stock guarantees from Coe Con verse Edwards, via agent Lewis Wood.

Dr Carlson to Visit La Salle Optician Tuesday Visit

Dr J E Carlson the La Salle optician will be at Dr Bremmer's office on Tuesday September 29 fitting glasses from 1130 to 4 pm. The school lawn has been harrowed and seeded and will be a beautiful grassy area in a couple of years as it grows.

Former Principal Price Wins Whiteside County Superintendent Nomination

Marty B Price former Ashton Fulton school administrator and former local principal won the Republican nomination for Whiteside County Superintendent of Schools after a threeway race on the recent primary. He secured 951 votes against Sterling's Chaplin 572 and Lyn don Bell 337. Price drew broad backing in Fulton Morrison Rock Falls and other townships though Sterling gave him few votes. He previously led Ashton schools 1901 to 1906 before Fulton. The Gazette joins Ashton in congratulating him. Mrs Lesslie's Sunday school class held a 30 member outing with 12 drivers to Dixon dining at Shefield hotel and a return via boat and river trip ending contentedly.

The United States Census Bureau bulletin shows 6626 Lee County homes with 2696 farm homes, 757 owned free of mortgage, 546 mortgaged, and 1352 rented. Urban homes total 3930 with 2398 owners, 418 mortgaged, 1905 free of encumbrance, and 1545 rented. Some data were not obtainable. Phillips Wins Republican Nomination for Chief Deputy

Robert R. Phillips of Steward won the Republican nomination for chief deputy sheriff last week with a plurality of 115 votes in a three candidate race. The contest was peaceful. Phillips will have party support in the election and his prior service under Sheriff Clarence id is cited as making him an efficient, experienced official fit for the role.

Subscription List Grows and Paddock No-Hits

Moyer Wins GOP Nomination for County Treasurer

Dixon furniture dealer John E. Moyer won the Republican nomination for county treasurer at last week’s primary. A new face in county politics, he gained many friends with his pleasant manners and broad business experience, which supporters say will aid handling the office’s clerical and financial duties. Class No. 6 of the Methodist Episcopal Sunday school plans a trip to Chana next Sunday, leaving Franklin Grove area by automobile at 12 30 PM. Mrs. E J Randall visited Franklin Grove Thursday.

Civil War Veteran Jacob Van Ness Dies at 77

Jacob Van Ness a Civil War veteran and Illinois resident for over fifty years died Monday at noon after a paralytic stroke. Born in Indiana in 1837 he enlisted in the 34th Illinois in 1861 and fought from Shiloh through the Atlanta campaign and to Washington. Funeral services were at Washington Grove Christian Church with interment in Washington Grove cemetery wrapped in Old Glory.
