Town Council Passes Tax Levy and Discusses Street Needs

The village board met with all members present and approved the tax levy of 2615 and a gas bond levy of 2000 with 160 interest. A bridge or tile for Mrs. Griswold and a street light near Lyon's were referred to committees. Insurance premium payments and a couple schoolyard gas lights for a Soldier's reunion were discussed.

Making Big Map of Illinois by Government Surveyors

Surveyors sent to Illinois by the government begin a topographical map in Champaign county. The project aims to produce a nationwide map showing homes, schools, churches, roads, ditches, streams and more for government and public use. The work covers quadrangles twelve and a half miles by seventeen and a half miles in each sheet.

Reyn olds Township Sunday School Convention and Old Settlers Picnic

Reynolds township hosts its Sunday School convention at Reynolds Evangelical church on October 1 with E H Wiener presiding and speakers including J H Kersten Rev J Zipperer and Dr C M Cheadle Also Mr A W Rosecrans will report on Toronto International convention lessons. The Lee County Old Settlers Association held its 33rd annual picnic at Compton with about 400 attending honoring early settlers Alexander P Gilmore born 1835 and Eleanor Berry born 1837. The gathering featured music, prayers, speeches, solos, a ribbon of berry dishes and a community-wide pause in Paw Paw and Amboy activities.

New Proprietor Nabs Sterling's New Commercial Hotel

New proprietor Mr T F Rasbach of Sterling assumes control of the New Commercial Hotel after twelve years in the trade. He plans to clean and improve the building and invites public patronage. Women Are Barred rule thirteen blocks rural mail carrier appointments, limiting posts to men unless no men are available.

Notice previews next week's GazetTrE with Soldiers and Sailors Reunion counts and orders for extras. Accident Bulletin No 15 from the Interstate Commerce Commission reports January to March 1905 rail accidents, detailing 232 killed, 3,713 injured, 15,306 total casualties, with 3,108 collisions and derailments and $2,449,248 damage, noting decreases from the prior quarter.

Ashton Defeated by Franklin Grove in Eleven Inning Tie

Ashton High School fell 6 to 5 to Franklin Grove in an eleven inning opener. Franklin led most of the contest until Ashton tied in the ninth. In extras Ashton scored in the 11th but Franklin Grove produced two late hits after an error. Sindlinger fanned twelve for Ashton. Jeter struck out seven for Franklin Grove.

Mr Berghofer and son return from Bremmer visit

Mr W Berghofer and his son Elmer returned to Quincy Monday evening after visiting at the home of Dr Bremmer.

Ashton Public School Opens Monday with New Learnings

The Ashton Public school will begin Monday morning September 11. Professor Price has arranged the course of study and will supervise with assistant Miss E Louise Bates of Charlotte Michigan. Miss Alice M Cleary of Dixon will teach seventh and eighth grades. Five other ladies return to teaching positions. The district has added improvements for warmth and sanitation. Books are on shelves and available today through Saturday. Dr J E Carlson the Optician advertises in this issue.
