Lightning Strikes Barn on Cowell Farm

A barn and sheds on the Cowell place nine miles northwest burned to the ground after a Tuesday morning lightning strike. Fr E Wagner and miner Spencer were nearby as a team and wagon stood by. the bolt killed a gun horse, dazed all, and the barn’s contents including hay oats and machinery were destroyed. Loss about 2000 dollars, partly insured, with one harness saved.

Ashton Loses in Horse Race and Baseball Game

Saturday events in Ashton saw J. M. Barto's Peanuts finish second by a length in the Northwestern Railroad road race toward Franklin Grove. In the baseball clash at 4:40, Rochelle defeated Ashton 10 to 7 after Ashton led early, errors turning the game.

Open rate one third for Illinois to Ashton reunion

Western Passenger Association grants an open rate of one third for the round trip from Illinois to attend the Old Soldier and Sailors' reunion in Ashton. Local one way rate is $3.75 or less. Excursion tickets available September 5 to 7 inclusive, good to return, leaving Ashton through September 8.

Northwestern survey aims to shorten Nelson Nachusa line

A force of Northwestern surveyors led by B Robert Kulp S H Weinberger and N E F Root began work from Nelson toward Dixon to locate a shorter route between Nelson and Nachusa The project targets reducing two steep grades and may bypass Dixon depending on the chosen path. If approved the cut off would speed heavy freights and through passenger travel, with right of way secured first. Other items include church notices and local housekeeping updates.
