Governor Charles S. Deneen visited Ashton and Lee county, defended the tariff law and criticized the “bathroom legislators” tied to Lorimer. He praised Taft, urged party unity, and backed John C. McKenzie for U.S. representative while praising local Republicans A. T. Tourtillott and A. N. Abbott.
Franklin Grove youth Lloyd Miller was acquitted by a circuit court jury after being charged with robbing barber George Westfield. Miller testified he was robbed the same night and his hat was found at the scene. jurors deliberated four hours over five ballots, ending 11 to 1 for acquittal.
Reynolds township Republicans held a Saturday rally at the Wiener school house with county candidates, Judge Robert H. Scott, Warren Badger, L. W. Miller, C. P. Reid, W. C. Thompson, and States Attorney Harry Edwards praising the ticket. John H. Byers of the Dixon Telegraph led the keynote defending the party. James Cass, 46, son of Manchester residents, died at his parents’ Rockton home after years in Chicago and Terre Haute, likely zinc poisoning. He leaves a wife, three children, two sisters, and a funeral was held at the family residence with Roscoe Masonic lodge assisting.

Dwight Rolph, son of B. M. Rolph, is held on involuntary manslaughter charges in Moline after Albert Klingberg, 80, died from injuries after being struck by Rolph’s car on Fifth avenue. Rolph claims the man stepped into the street. Klingberg died following an October 8 incident. Also noted is Lewis Payne’s dog attack while securing seed corn, with Payne treated in Chicago and the dog killed.
Marvin Hughitt resigns after 54 years as president of the Chicago and North Western Railway. At Chicago annual meeting W A Gardner is elected to succeed him as chairman of the board, continuing the company’s long line of leadership. Hughitt’s departure marks a major promotion within the rail industry.
The annual convention of Reynolds township Sunday schools met at the Reynolds Evangelical church with a large turnout. C C Hintz of Dixon spoke on The Sunday School a Success, Rev F W Nazarene addressed temperance, and B J Berg was elected township president. Special music featured a quartet including E Wiener and others. A union Epworth League and Y P A meeting followed with Sidney Carney presiding. A convention is planned at Fertile Valley church on November 20 for Viola township.
The Optician J E Carlson will be in Ashton at Dr H A Bremmer's office on Monday October 31 from 9 a m to 4 p m to fit glasses. A Halloween supper is planned at the M E Church basement October 28 from 5 30 to 8 p m. Mrs Martin Krug visited her son in Rochelle yesterday. W B Tilton traveled to Chicago yesterday morning.
John T. Ward received two and a half years at hard labor in the United States penitentiary at Leavenworth Kansas for robbing the Nachusa post office. He was fined $1 and costs. Judge K M Landis presided in Freeport. Ward, age 34, born in New York, had no fixed residence and was arrested at Silvis near Moline with two ten dollar bills matching the remittance notes.
Will Hakes of Chicago and Miss Josephine Schmidt of Belleville were married by Rev. C. Dexheimer in a quiet ceremony at the Schmidt home, decorated with fall flowers. The bride wore white mesh satin and carried roses. Mrs. Ben Fischer served as matron of honor and Arthur Schmidt was best man. A wedding supper followed, and the couple planned a brief wedding journey before settling back.
