Ashton Rebekah Lodge Installs First Officers Here

Ashton Rebekah Lodge No 497 instituted last Wednesday with sixty charter members. Deputy Grand Master Miss Carrie Smith presided as officers were installed, including Noble Grand Mrs Ora Beach and Secretary Mrs Nellie Hart. A banquet followed with sandwiches, fried chicken, salads, ice cream and cake.

New Express Rates Rule Sets Distance Based Charges

Illinois railroad and warehouse commission orders new express rates to take effect October 15. The table lists cents per 100 pounds for shipments across multiple distance bands, with a separate tariff for packages under 100 pounds and a minimum twenty cent rate on short hauls. Example shows a 10 pound parcel to 70 miles costs 30 cents, and 100 pound rate at 60 cents applies to smaller packages.

Sunday School Contest at Methodist Episcopal church

An examination for Sunday school pupils is set for next Sunday at 9 30 am with all invited. Women and girls sit on the south side men and boys on the north. Judge is County President C C Hintz of Dixon. Twenty questions by A W Rosecrans cover last quarter lessons with no trick queries. Ten questions per side count ten points each for correct answers. No Bibles or lesson papers allowed. The losing side will provide refreshments for a future Sunday social.

Governor Deneen to Speak in Ashton and County Tour

Governor Charles S. Deneen will speak in Ashton at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday October 26 then tour Franklin Grove Amboy Compton and Paw Paw with local officials and candidates in attendance. The event marks his first Ashton visit and will be followed by a Republican rally with Woodman band music.

Death of Mrs Mary Rolph and Illinois reminiscences

Obituary notes the death of Mrs Mary Rolph widow of Rev F B Rolph born in Canada on March 11 1833 died October 10 1910 aged 77 years 6 months and 29 days funeral at Washington Grove church with Rev S A Caris directing. The City Meat Market changed ownership Monday morning with Will Meister selling his interest to Carl Stephan who takes immediate possession. Stephan’s prior market experience is cited as a sign he will run a prosperous business. Meister’s future plans are noted. The Reynolds Y P A schedules a rally for Sunday November 6. A free lecture by Prof. C B Bowman of Naperville College titled The Unknown God of the Far East will be given Saturday night.

Chicago builders Burns Construction Co propose electric line from Lee Center to Amboy with connections toward Bradford church Steward and DeKalb. Local residents favor bringing line to Ashton and Ashton avoids Steward route. Reynolds Township GOP rally set for Oct 22 at Wiener schoolhouse with John H Byers Harry Edwards and Harry Warner as speakers.
