A patriotic gathering at the Lafayette high school in Ashton township drew a large crowd. N A Petrie presided and opened with a ten minute talk urging Liberty Loan subscriptions. F W Mozart from Chicago spoke, and Mrs Mozart joined for brief remarks. The event featured a Lafayette band concert and highlighted farm crop values and wartime sacrifices, with Petrie and a three member committee campaigning for bond sales.

Dear Friend writes from Quantico Virginia on October 2 1917 about arriving August 14 at the camp near the Potomac. He compares the camp favorably with Paris Island notes daily drill schedule liberty and meals. He mentions visits to Washington Baltimore and Fredericksburg and plans to depart soon with the Sixth Regiment or Eighth being formed. He describes nightly band concerts sacred services and that many fellows have left for Camp Grant. The Ashton area Red Cross garment department reports heavy activity shipping hundreds of items to war zone victims in Europe. They list men and women garments including underwear shirts coats cloaks dresses shawls and blankets with shipments and a forthcoming second dispatch.
