Salt used to harden soft corn in Whiteside County

County agent L S Griffith reports a Farmers Institute letter about salt saving soft corn. A Chicago firm investigated salt’s effect in 1881 1915 and present season finding dry firm ears with no mold or rot though moisture drained by salt. Advisers recommend ventilated cribs husk free corn sorted for rot and salt dosages per wagon load or per 1000 bushels with continued ventilation and caution that results are unproven but worth trial.

War Tax Revenue Stamps for Parcel Post Initiated

War tax stamps start December 1 1917 on all parcel post with postage 25 cents or more. Tax equals one cent per 25 cent or fraction, rising with higher postage. stamps sold at the Post Office and must be affixed and canceled by the sender. Postmaster J A Rogster notes carriers will carry stamps on routes starting December 1.
