A Savanna woman's club urges readers to prevent fly infestation with instructive guidance. The warnings describe flies as filthy disease carriers and detail methods to screen milk and food, disinfect rooms, and trap or kill flies, including kerosene, formaldehyde solution, and pyrethrum. They emphasize cleanliness, prompt waste removal, and reporting nuisances to health authorities.

The asparagus season is in full swing with a Sunday evening shipment of 348 cases, the largest ever from the city. Warm weather, larger statewide acreage, and good growth drive the volume while prices run 65 to 75 cents per case. All shipments use No 14, delayed about ten minutes daily due to loading.
The Ashton township Sunday schools plan a three session convention on May 21. Morning at Presbyterian church features Rev. Alexander English sermon on a major Sunday school problem. Afternoon at United Evangelical church includes classes and talks led by A. J. Nickey EB. J. Yenerich and Rev. F. Theiss. Evening at Methodist Episcopal church offers Rev W K Loofbourrow address Our Text Book and temperance talk by Rev F. Nazarene. The First Evangelical church abstains May 21, with services moved to May 28.

Lot owners are urged to have their plots cared for to keep the cemetery in first class condition. The Cemetery Association will maintain all lots if requested by the owners.
Ashton High School defeated Dixon 4 to 1 on home grounds as Paddock struck out 20 and allowed three. Dixon scored on an error while Keenan and Hoberg pitched. Ashton fielded well with multiple baserunners and led from the start. In a separate child league game Bradford beat China Township 17 to 7 with Albert Schafer and Frank Schinzer behind the bat for Bradford and Peterman with Roy Miller for China.
The 1911 Lee county fair runs September 19 to 22 with four days of events. Secretary W L Leach asserts no reduction in length and notes stock sales totaling $5000, a 20 percent dividend on last year’s stock, and funds to build a floral hall and new stables starting June 1. Farmers and horse owners are urged to participate as harvests finish. Coffee day at Ramsler’s offers four cents off per pound.
A public meeting of Ashton old soldiers and citizens set Memorial Day for May 30 at two o'clock on the school campus weather permitting. N A Petrie presided, C K Northrup acted as pro tem clerk, and committees were named for speaker band vocal music decoration and other duties. Reverend R Scott Hyde D D will give the address with local teachers and community members named for roles.
Mrs. Margaret Cleary formerly resided east of the city died last week at her Rochelle home at eighty. Born in Ireland she came to the U S at nine. She and her husband lived near Dixon before moving to a farm east of town and later to Rochelle sixteen years ago. Survived by children John M Cleary Mary Govern H H Cleary Sister Mary Agnella Sister Mary Rose P F Cleary Thomas F and Margaret. Funeral was Friday at St Patrick's Rochelle with Father Paul Burke officiating. Burial in Rochelle Cemetery.
A Monday inaugural run from Chicago marked the Northwestern's new terminal station with officers and directors aboard a special train. The 10 a.m. departure preceded passenger service opening on June 3, featuring two private cars and four Pullmans led by veteran conductor Pat McGuire and engineer Jim Cosgrove on engine 391. The through trip aims for Lander Wyoming and a return stop in St Paul, lasting a week to ten days.
A Decoration Day dance is set for Tuesday evening May 30 at the opera house. Good music will be provided and everyone is invited.
Superintendent William E. Wearth of the Sandusky Cement Co. mill at Dix on assaulted Ernest Moore editor of the Dixon Telegraph after the paper called the Lithuanian colony near the plant a sweet scented colony. Moore, a courteous editor, had criticized the settlement. Wearth was arrested. the case was continued as he vows to clear himself of assault charges.
Local merchants and boosters urge unity to revive Ashton’s town pride with a full day plan. A morning parade, morning ball game, address, contests, evening band concert, and fireworks are proposed to mark the Fourth with public enthusiasm.
C E Holdridge, express messenger on the Sterling passenger, celebrated the 32nd anniversary of his service with American Express Friday. He began in Galesburg and later served on the Rockford Aurora run before taking the Sterling assignment, now the heaviest express run on the Northwestern road. The trip time has shortened from over five hours to three hours and 15 minutes since he started. Band Concert Saturday night.
