Johannes H. Stauffenberg born 1885 in Obergrenzebach Germany emigrated to America to join missionary work among Germans. He founded Ashton church, served Rochelle Dixon Paynes Point and Ashton Franklin Grove parishes, died at 77 after decades of sacrifice and care from family and congregations.
Ashton Lodge No. 581 has accepted an invitation to lay the corner stone of the new public school building. The date is expected in early June with a committee on arrangements chosen. other lodges and prominent speakers will attend. The school project has faced delays due to a broken concrete mixer, now replaced, while material arrives rapidly and foundation work progresses with cross-wall forms underway.
Mrs. Cordelia J. Rush aged 81 years six months seven days died Monday morning at her daughter Mrs. Alice Stewart’s home in Bradford township seven miles southeast of the city after six weeks bedfast. Born October 25 1845 in Ohio she migrated to Indiana and Illinois with her husband Daniel Rush with six children born to the union. Survived by 35 grandchildren 32 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Funeral held at 10:00 yesterday from United Evangelical church with Rev. Geo A Walter officiating and interment in Ashton cemetery.
The Odd Fellows' building corner stone at Lee Center was laid at 1 30 pm amid rain and a smaller crowd. Mrs A L Haskell aged 92 donated the ground and laid the stone assisted by James Ewing Davis Warren C Darnell and Eugene Welch with Haskell Lodge officers. A Woodman Hall dinner followed and speeches by grand lodge representatives. Mr Rosecran's class plans a Starved Rock trip June 18 with about 65 members using over a dozen autos.
A 14 year legal battle over 160 acres near Ashton ends in Moline with the Reitz farm reconveyed to Tony Reitz. Attorney James W. Watts steered the case, aided by Cyrus E. Dietz, culminating in a settlement where funds were exchanged and title restored. Also notes include a May 13 1913 school report for Dist. No. 110 and a Chicago guest visiting in Ashton.
Mrs. Ernest Royster and son of Sterl were visitors in this city Thursday. Former residents, Mr. Royster served in the signal service on the Northwest. Memorial day exercises will be held on the grassy plot between J. B. and Howard Quick residences if weather permits. Ford dealer Iford Knapp increased stock with two sales to Roy Farrer and William Gleim. A talent entertainment titled His Last Chance was presented by Gleim and Ink. The Nelson family hosted a home gathering Saturday after a month in Laurens, Iowa. Dwight Hartzell moved to Wheaton for a meat market job. John Drummond’s Ford backfired, injuring his wrist. Franklin Grove beat Ashton 10 to 6 in baseball, and defeated Dixon River Military Academy 7 to 4. American Express increased business at the station. Asparagus season parallels growing express traffic. John C. Henning will visit Germany to attend the Life Guards centennial. he asks all debtors to settle accounts. A newspaper rumor claims the editor’s funeral drew a large crowd, with 672 delinquent subscribers lamenting his lack of earnings. Louis Williams presents The Wonders of Electricity at the Opera House with experiments. tickets 25 cents, reservations at Gazette Book Store. Ready for business M. M. Clean has opened in the Gazette Book Store basement, selling salvage items. special sale prices aplicado. The community thanks those who comforted the bereaved Stauffenberg family and business friends who closed stores in their honor. Mrs. E. J. Randall and daughters Lucile and Genevieve visited Rochelle Saturday.
Seven rural schools near Ashton hold eighth grade commencement in the city opera house on Saturday evening May 2. Participating schools include Union Gooch Beach Killmer Wiener Vaupel and Salzman with teachers Marguerite Roesler Estella E. Krug Helen C. Army M Luckey Blanche Gale Edith Stevens and Edith Walter. Ten graduates listed Mildred Albrecht Marie Semmler Frances Hawthorne Anna Schnell Alta Wagner Clarence Schafer Gertrude Vogeler John Smith Milton Vaupel Frances Drais. Speaker Editor Frank E. Stevens of the Dixon Citizen. Supt L W Miller to give diploma. Music by orchestra vocal numbers and readings.
The Dixon Telegraph notes a templating extension aimed at profitability and the Insull interests backing a plan to extend the local line to connect with the DeKalb and Aurora lines, potentially giving Dixon a direct electric rail link to Chicago.
Northern Illinois Public Service plans to absorb Aurora Elgin and Chicago DeKalb and Sycamore Woodstock and Sycamore Marengo and Harvard Elgin and Belvidere railroads to gain control of interurban and city lines in Kane McHenry DeKalb Boone Lake and Cook counties. A power plant at Marengo would supply electricity to these areas and potentially Chicago elevated and surface rail systems if consolidation occurs. The move, backed by common ownership with Commonwealth Edison and tied to Illinois bills, could spur the extension of the Sterling Dixon and Eastern to DeKalb.
