Four hundred Ashton residents greeted President Theodore Roosevelt as his special train paused here at 9 39 a m en route to Chicago from Colorado. The president urged proper citizenship through education and praised schoolteachers for guiding youth, saying they supplement family work in shaping future men and women.
Thirty seven years ago May General John A Logan then chief of the Grand Army of the Republic issued Order No 11 urging officers to decorate soldiers graves and honor their deeds. The act has taught patriotism to the rising generation and fostered love of country.
An official train lead by Roosevelts party arrived as crowds of students marched to the depot. He spoke at Dixon about Illinois education and Memorial Day traditions, urging proper observance of May 30th ceremonies, flag etiquette, and patriotism. The event highlighted Illinois pride and the governors loyal to the flag.
Mrs Blanche Jennings dies at her northwest city home Monday morning about eight. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Jacob Van Ness and would have been thirty eight in June. She taught in the public school here for several years. Funeral held at her late home yesterday at 10 o clock with burial at Washington Grove Christian Church. Rev I W Oneal officiated.
E W Chafin of Chicago will address the Presbyterian church next Sunday morning. He led the Good Templars in Wisconsin for years, bringing wide experience and talent. Also noted are Christian Endeavor on Spirit-filled Christians led by Miss Lucy Hart and an evening prayer meeting on stewardship per 1 Cor 4:2.
Promotions promise 20 lessons plus a $10 violin outfit for 17 dollars and various instrument outfits from 9.50 to 19 dollars with instruction books. Inquiries directed to Gazetto Book Store. Also notes Miss Dysart teaches spring term in Joe Gooch district.
The Institute At Rochelle a sub district Epworth League will be held Friday and Saturday this week at Rochelle. A number of good speakers will attend and a goodly sized delegation is expected from here. All the home news for 1.00.
The township convention hosted morning services at the Methodist Church and an evening gathering at the Presbyterian Church with large crowds. A. J. Key opened at 10 30, with a choir of about thirty. topics covered include officers teachers as evangelists, teachers training, and the link between Sunday School and church growth. Mrs. J. C. Griffith elected president for the coming year. The Lee County Sunday Schools convention will meet in Lee Center on June 6 and 7.
Certificates of good moral character issued to Matthew Hale Quimby and Walter A. Evans. Claims allowed in multiple estates including Beulah Chapman and John W. D. Blake. Final reports approved and administrators discharged or appointed. Private sale petition for Delia A. Ives estate. Will proceedings for Samuel A. Abbott and Hartman Kersten set for hearing. Guardian discharged. The Gazette, $1.00 a year.
Saturday the Dixon South Side High School sophomore baseball team lost to Ashton second team in a quick 2:30 pm game. Ashton, despite being unorganized and in their first game, played fastball with Harvey Sindlinger pitching for Dixon held to few hits. In the eighth inning Ashton scored repeatedly with key hits by Henry Nelson and George Stephan as Dixon made errors.
