The old Ashton city council met Monday with Mayor pro tem Samuel T. Zeller Jr. elected. The council approved bills and a May financials, and passed an electric lighting ordinance granting John W. Weishaar a 25 year plant. New board members, standing committees, and a gas plant job bid were set.

New Pastor Assigned to Ashton Church
Rev. F. Theiss, pastor at Zion Evangelical, is reassigned by the Illinois conference to Ashton where he will move with his family next week. The Belvidere church, led by him for three years, saw increased membership and $700 spent on improvements. Ashton’s church recently completed a new $10,000 house of worship. Theiss, active in community movements, leaves many friends wishing him success.

Pension payments to be mailed as checks
Washington announces a plan from Commissioner Davenport to replace the voucher system with mailed pension checks. Each check will come in an envelope marked for delivery only to the pensioner or an immediate family member. If the recipient is deceased, the envelope is returned and the check includes a two-witness certificate to certify proper delivery.

Queen Esthers Entertain In May Circle Meeting
The Queen s circle held a May gathering at the Methodist church parlor with men invited. Games awarded flowers, grand prize was a May basket of candy won by C W Jonker. Supper served after eleven, then a stunt fest before departure. Public Memorial Day observances planned for Ashton on May 10 at seven.

Losers Entertain Winners in Eighth Grade Class
Eighth grade graduates were announced after final exams in Lee County.159 students from 64 county schools will graduate. Ashton district adds a dozen town school grads. The Bradford township convention program includes devotional lessons, temperance, and officer election. Champ Clark will headline Dixon Chautauqua July 29 to August 13 with military camp visits on the last weekend.

Death of Infant Twin in Reynolds Township
One of the twin boys born last week to Mr. and Mrs. August Geyer died at their home three miles southeast of town Monday morning. A private funeral service led by Rev. G. A. Walter was held Tuesday at ten o'clock at the home. Interment followed at Immanuel cemetery in Reynolds township.

Lee county named banner temperance county in Illinois
A banner county designation is given to Lee county for temperance work tied to Sunday schools. E. H. Wiener spearheaded the effort as the first such and Lee county operates 28 Sunday schools each with a temperance organization and a superintendent. W. E. Paddock leaves for Europe, visiting Chicago and New York before sailing to Liverpool for the summer.

Big Frost Impacts Asparagus Beds In Ashton
A heavy frost Tuesday morning damaged tender plants including asparagus. Expert R. J. Farringer notes only part of the fruit suffered. Ground was slightly frozen. Ashton Township Sunday School Association executive committee met Tuesday evening at Rev. Walters home to plan three services on Sunday May 21 at Presbyterian United Evangelical and Methodist churches.

Dynamo to Open 24 Hour Electric Light Plant in City
Plans filed by McCade and Weishaar after council granted a franchise show a 20 horsepower engine drives a 110 volt direct current dynamo. The 24 hour service plant will stock electrical supplies and offer power as well as lighting. A city canvass to gauge demand starts soon with several residents already expressing interest.
