Aldermen defeated a 169 name petition calling for license versus no license to be decided by direct vote. The council debated the issue in regular session at city hall with all members present except A E Hutchinson of Omaha. Minutes, bills, and payments were approved before the 3 to 2 vote ended the matter.

Senator Berry’s anti cigarette bill clears the Illinois senate without opposition. It marks the first regulation measure approved by the general assembly. The act punishes manufacturing selling or giving away any cigarette containing deleterious substances other than tobacco with a fine not exceed-
The measure classifies smoking as a misdemeanor for persons under 18 and for minor pupils in schools, colleges, academies or universities. Punishment includes fines up to $10 or up to thirty days in jail for violations in public roads, streets, alleys, parks or other lands used for public purposes or public places of business or amusement.
A group of prominent citizens organize a company to develop 6000 acres in Big Horn County Wyoming. Dr H A Bremmer serves as president with A E Hutchinson treasurer L Booth secretary and Marcus Vender J C Griffith and Fred Beach among stockholders. Prof Knight, a leading geologist, deems the land the best oil bearing west of the Mississippi. Wells planned for this coming summer amid proximity to existing wells in the Proxen oil zone.
