Sunday morning marked the coldest day of the winter with seven degrees below zero as a northeast wind carried a heavy snowstorm Saturday night. Frosted ears and noses were common while country roads remained nearly impassable. by Monday the temperature rose to about 30 degrees higher and surface snow began to melt.
The undersigned will offer at his residence in Ashton the sale of two horses and assorted farm equipment including harness wagon plows and more. All sums ten dollars or less cash. over that a 12 month credit on bankable notes at 6 percent. No removal until settled. Auctioneers names and clerk listed. Read your home paper.
A quiet wedding was held last Saturday at the bride's mother's home as Miss Chrysteen Hisenberg and Fred B. Wood wed with Rev. Alfred E. Simester officiating. The couple will establish a home in the city while Wood works as Northwestern station agent at Flagg. The Gazette gained four new subscribers and lists several renewals from Ashton and surrounding areas. A school ground out-house will be auctioned per the school board, and merchants extend their closing agreement to March 15 for two weeks of vacation due to cold weather. Mrs. H T Brown of Rockford visited the Griffith household.
Ira W. Lewis reviews a Chicago report on the Good Roads Committee hiring women to locate scripture for sermons. He cites Isaiah passages as fitting for a road theme and notes the texts will go to Motor Age, with other local notes on gifts and a DeKalb visit.
Authorities and citizens stopped the outbreak quickly with a week of closures. Schools reopened Monday and life resumed as the community maintained strict measures to curb the illness. In Ashton Franklin Grove the Presbyterian church reports Rev. R. L. MacWherter as minister and lists service details for the coming Sabbath. Basket social planned at Hoosier Street School with elocutionist from Mt. Morris. admission 15 cents for adults, 10 cents for children. ladies to bring baskets. Killmer school report notes 14 pupils enrolled, 12.9 average daily attendance, six students never absent or tardy. An entertainment and basket social is scheduled at Middlebury on Friday night March 14 1913 with proceeds aiding the school. admission at door and baskets for two lunches.
Village primary will be held next Tuesday April 16 to nominate candidates for the village election on the third Tuesday in April. Five parties may participate the Republican Democratic Socialists Progressive Peoples with only Peoples fielding candidates. Presidential candidates for Village Board are A M Moore J B Farrer and John W Weishaar. Board of Trustees candidates seven with three to be chosen are Henry Oesterheld E C Shippee Ext Ven erich Clifford Knapp Harry Pierce J C Wetzel Christ Kurth. Village Clerk vacancy has Ralph J Dean as sole candidate. New nickels arrive at Ashton Bank with Indian head and buffalo designs to be minted locally. limited circulation until dies complete. Taxes: M N Glenn’s hardware store hosts Ashton township tax collection and Frank Mehlhauser to collect Bradford township taxes Friday afternoon and Saturday. Gazette price is $1.50 yearly.
In Amboy on February 18 1913 the Lee County Fair association board of appraisers tallies real estate and personal property at over 15000 with little debt. The report lists 45 acres of land a race horse and livestock barns the amphitheater track and equipment totaling eighteen thousand eight hundred eight eight dollars.
