Drainage project to overhaul Inlet swamp in Lee County

The Lee County court orders a major drainage improvement for 153 land owners in the Inlet swamp district. The $386000 plan deepens rock cuts and extends outlets to alleviate flooding across 30,000 acres from Amboy to Steward. Ten Hour Law for Women Signed by Governor Deneen

The ten hour act expands protections from factories to nearly all female workers. It bans more than ten hours per day for women in hotels, restaurants, telegraph and telephone offices, amusements venues, express and public utility firms, carriers, and public institutions. Employers must keep records of hours worked by women. Will the law be observed.

Hurt in Runaway Injures Elmer Anderson at Inlet

Sixteen year old Elmer Anderson son of John Anderson of Lee Center sustained internal injuries when a runaway team pinned him against a tree while helping crush stone at Inlet. Reports say he is recovering. Mrs. M C Hurd and her children Leo and Ruth visited at Oregon with her daughter Mrs. W E Wright last week.

Ashton School District Census Totals 21 and Under

O P Canfield completed the Ashton school census showing 245 children of school age and 68 under six. Males under 21 total 173, females under 21 total 140, with 39 males and 29 females under six. Overall under 21 total 313 and under six 68. The city census 826 exceeds federal counts, guiding state school fund distribution.

New Potatoes Declared A Luxury Amid Famine Fears

A famine in new potatoes is predicted as the wholesale price rose to seventy cents a peck. Stalks show few sprouts or none, with many bearing no potatoes. Merchants report scarcity even at high prices, boosting demand for old potatoes and raising their value.

Dixon District Campmeeting set for Franklin Grove July 13 23

Preparations are underway for the twenty ninth Dixon District Campmeeting to be held on the Franklin Grove campground July 13 23. Rev Claude B Moore and officers promise the best talent yet with lectures by notable speakers from Chicago Brooklyn Freeport and Evanston among others. The program includes illustrated lectures The Passion Play Shepherds of the Kingdom and The Adult Class Movement plus a sacred concert by the Ashton choir and local musicians. A. M. Newcomer oversees grounds to welcome a large crowd for an enriching outing.

Odd Fellows Hold Memorial Service and Mission Festival

Ashton Lodge No. 9/7 Independent Order of Odd Fellows held a memorial service in the lodge room with about fifty attendees. Rev. Alexander English and Rev. W. K. Loofbourrow delivered addresses, and four hymns were sung by the Odd Fellows' Male Quartet. The annual Mission Festival is planned for St. John's Lutheran church with two German language services next Sunday. At Ashton Bank directors approved moving 5,000 from earnings to the surplus fund, boosting it to 15,000, and declared a 3 percent semi annual dividend.

Oregon Firm Seeks 25 Year Electric Franchise

Solicitor circulates petition among property owners to grant Oregon Electric Light and Power a 25 year franchise to install an electric lighting system. If approved at the July council meeting, work would start immediately and extend from Brown corners four miles west of the city. Clyde Goodman Sord, son of Mrs. Frank Bohart, sold to Cleveland in the American League after playing in Victoria, Canada.

Fourth of July Matinee Harness Races at Oregon Fair Grounds
