Bradford Township has finished its fundraising campaign for Red Cross funds. The effort achieved strong participation and exceeded expected goals, prompting praise for volunteers and supporters across the community.
Bradford township reports a complete quota of 1260 75 raised through district contributions and local volunteer effort led by Chairman Andrew Aschenbrenner. Districts listed receiving varied amounts from 19 50 to 252 00, with a long citizen listing and Red Cross sale noted.
Roll of Honor lists navy, army, air force, and marine service members by rank and unit. Included are dozens of names across artillery, ordnance, aviation, coast artillery, and hospital corps with many associated units and branches. the list ends with a note Deceased.
Postmaster Joseph A. Roesler organizes a high school auditorium meeting with a recently returned French battle veteran. Lee county must raise 550000 for war provisions. 100000 already spent, leaving 450000 to sell in stamps. June 28 set for a nationwide drive lead. A pledge card will require each family to buy one war stamp monthly. Stamps pay 4 percent compound, redeemable anytime with ten days’ notice. No single purchase exceeds 1000 dollars, and about 27500 residents are urged to contribute at least 20 dollars each. Stamps are not taxable and aid both government and buyer.
Paul Charters has been commissioned as second lieutenant by Secretary of War Baker, dated June 1. He served as sergeant in Company M, 342nd Regiment, attended the Third Officer's Training Camp and finished in April with honors, then departed for Camp Pike Arkansas for duty. Also notes church cooperation by Endeavorers and a June 14 ice cream social to raise funds for Bradford boys called to the colors.
The Friday program in the high school auditorium by Mrs. Fred A. Graham and assistants Lucile Randall and Leala Quick featured readings and music with strong attendance. Receipts totaled 52 dollars, 17.50 funded a French war orphan, and the rest given to the Mission Board of the Methodist church for wartime Europe. The same show will tour Franklin Grove Friday with similar proceeds.
The Methodist Sunday school hosts a strawberry festival on the school lawn this Saturday at eight. Proceeds benefit the Ashton Auxiliary of the Red Cross. Strawberries, cream, and cake will be served for 25 cents as the Lafayette Band provides music.

Dr H L Winder announces the sale of his medical practice to Dr B B McClure of Morrison. All persons knowing themselves indebted to him are asked to settle at once.
Mrs William Petrie and daughter Ella visited Dixon yesterday as notes announce start of Sunday Chicago editions at ten cents from June 16.
Joseph O Webster of Dixon visited between trains in town with relatives. Chicago guest John Williamson stayed with Adam Strube last week. Dixon visitors include Mrs Frank Bohart and family. Supervisor Heibenthal attended a county board meeting in Dixon. Miss Hilda McIntosh visited Hamilton Ohio. Lizzie Heibenthal attended a Bradford United Evangelical picnic near Franklin Grove. The Williamses from Chicago visited E J Williams. Private Andrew Sharps left for Camp Dodge Iowa. Earl Bemis and family from Oregon visited the Tuck home. Mrs T W Faryer and Mrs George Gonnerman with daughter were guests. Mrs Chester Carnahan will teach in Ashton Public School next year. Ladies Aid meets June 19 at the Methodist church with comforters to tie. Harrison Wagner attended Wheaton College commencement via Dixon. Frank S Brewer returned to Naperville after visiting his mother. Charles O Yenerich of Rockford visited, mother accompanying him home later. M B Griffith and George Graham returned from Cornell College in mud-filled trip. Queen Esthers meet June 17 at Methodist parlor with Miss Glendenen visiting. Miss Janette Nickey’s pipe organ recital invites and notes of her USC music degree. Mrs Harry Cluts received a letter from Corporal Marxman in France. Carl wrote from France after landing, sharing impressions. Private George Walters of Co L 842nd Regiment at Camp Grant returned home with an honorable discharge after months of illness. He plans to improve health.
Bradford Red Cross Unit has about 200 members but only around a dozen attend meetings. A record gathering at the Wagners' home drew 14, the largest turnout, while typical attendance runs five to six. Leaders vow weekly notices in the Ashton Gazette naming attendees, listing Mesdames Wagner Schafer Richwine Hart Hann Degner and Misses Hart Vaupel Butler Butler Hann Eich among attendees.
The Red Cross membership has passed eight hundred this week with five new members joining to bring the total to 902. New members are Miss Ida E Billmire Clarence Drummond Mrs Nellie Drummond Gottfried Johnson and Mrs Tillie Johnson. Mrs Mary Glenn donations five dollars to the auxiliary. Presbyterian Church schedules an evening preaching service at 7 30 next Sunday. The annual Sunday school picnic is set for Wednesday June 19 at Lafayette Grove. All are invited. United Evangelical Church lists services at Ashton on Sunday June 16 with Bible School K L C E and Bradford preaching at 10 am. Mrs G Mack and daughter Roslinda visited Rochelle Tuesday.
Mills and Petrie present a memorial day chapel in Parish New York cemetery, a gift to the community. Petrie delivered the presentation speech recalling pioneer times, with a large turnout and attendees at the service.
