Eighth Grade Graduation at Ashton Public School
The Ashton Public School held its third annual eighth grade graduation in the opera house, awarding diplomas to eleven students bound for high school. An evening of readings, music, and speeches featured Alma Mall, Ada George, Ray Arnould, Marjorie Griffith, and County Superintendent L W Miller, who urged character building. The program closed with a Sailor’s Life chorus and benediction as the heat-filled venue remained nearly full.

Contest Prizes Awarded At Lee County School Contest
The Judges awarded Miss Florence Whitney Amboy a first prize set valued at $60 and second prize of 40 dollars to three Dixon Amboy and Ashton entrants. The contest encouraged use of reference works and showed county pupils excel in history penmanship and spelling. Third prizes were awarded. winners to be announced and prizes delivered soon. The Methodist Episcopal Sunday School picnic will be at Steamboat Rock on Tuesday June 13 with a rain date June 16. those without transport should meet at the church at eight o'clock.

Illinois Opens Prairie Chicken Hunt Seven Days A Year
Illinois enacts a seven day open season for prairie chickens from November 10 to 17 with a limit of three birds per day. Quail protection for four years is dropped, woodcocks season is closed, and submerged lands gain trespass protection. The act adds sixteen district wardens and one deputy per county. Band concerts return weekly, and local notes mention visits and harness shop work.

Church Extends Farewell Surprise for Dr Bremmer

Modern Woodmen Memorial Service Featured in Bloomington
The Modern Woodman memorial service Sunday drew a large crowd with 150 Woodmen marching to the cemetery. Attendee Attorney Goodheart of Bloomington, state lecturer, delivered an eloquent address on home and fraternalism after a sacred quartet performance and opening prayer by Rev. Alexander English. The procession to the cemetery was led by the band and drill team, with Venerable Counsel George A. Putman in charge of the graveside service. nine deceased Woodmen were commemorated.

June Council Meeting Sees Sidewalk Petitions and Franchise Change
At the June city council meeting several sidewalk petitions were ranted for cement walks by August Klingebiel Mrs. Paul Pfetzing L. T. Moore and Carl Witzel. A petition from Martin Kilingebiel with a provision was referred to the proper committee. Trustee Roesler spoke for John Weishaar's electric light franchise, noting rubber insulation would not be required. The franchise was amended allowing use of any wire. Marshall Farrer was instructed to shoot all dogs at large lacking new licenses, a rule enforced as the dog graveyard begins to fill.

Fifth Annual Alumni Banquet at Ash ton High School
The fifth annual Ash ton High School Alumni association banquet was held Tuesday at the Presbyterian church hall with sixty two members and guests. Social time, a cross shaped table, red rose and syringa decorations, a two course dinner, and a program of toasts and solos followed. Notable speakers included Charles Arnould and Edward Kersten, with performances by Dorothy Pelck, Olive Menz, Pearl Knapp Billmire, Eva Arnould, and Eva C. Noelsch among others.
