Memorial Day Observance Honored Civil War Veterans
In ideal weather a large crowd gathered for Memorial Day ceremonies in town. Old soldiers met at the town hall and, led by the M. V. A. band, marched to the cemetery where 21 graves were decorated. Rev. R. L. MacWherter spoke on liberty and sacrifice, drawing contrasts between Union and Confederate suffering and urging honor for those who fought for freedom. The day included school performances, a roll of honor, and a later band concert in town.

Mrs Lucy Garrett Dies After Long Illness and Service
Mrs Lucy Garrett of Sublette and Rochelle died Sunday after a winter illness. Born 1840 in Palestine Grove she lived in Sublette and Ashton. She taught, helped found a Presbyterian church, and supported temperance groups. Funeral held at Rochelle Presbyterian Church.

No. 6 Class Plans Outing to Starved Rock
No 6 class of the Methodist Sunday school schedules a trip to Starved Rock for Thursday June 11 with 22 automobiles and about 125 participants. They will depart Ashton at 6:00 am and return via Ottawa Earlville and Paw Paw. A full attendance is urged at next Sunday’s meeting to finalize details.

Boy Tramp Sets Fire In Rochelle Jail
Thirteen year old Charles Ogden escaped from Rochelle jail through a 10 by 12 window and started a small fire in the south cell. Chief Hodge pursued, fugitive boarded a train, then was captured near Ashton before police arrived. Cashier Ralph Charters and helpers quickly extinguished the blaze.

BTH Alumni Association Holds Eighth Annual Meeting
The eighth annual alumni meeting was held Friday night in the High School auditorium with about one hundred attendees. Music by the Smith orchestra accompanied solos by Ruth Zeller and Alice Eddy and a duet by Minnie Krug and Genevieve Cheadle. President Roland P. Eisenberg acted as toastmaster. officers elected for the coming year were Ruth Zeller president Wesley Venerich vice president Estella Krug secretary and Raymond Pyatt treasurer. Refreshments of ice cream and cake followed a social hour.

Jeter Announces Candidacy for County Treasurer
Roy W. Jeter declares his run for the office of treasurer subject to the Democratic primary in September. He has long been urged by party supporters across Lee County and currently holds no opposition in the Democratic field. A Franklin Grove and Ashton grain buyer, Jeter serves on the Democratic County Central committee and earned praise for his campaign work.

No. 20 Carries Mail Resumes Service
No. 20 resumes mail service after a five year gap easing parcel post handling. No. 10 the faster train at 11 06 continues to carry mail, with No. 20 aiding local business mail. The 26th annual commencement at Ashton High School featured seven graduates in gray caps and gowns. Prof. H. A. Hollister of Champaign delivered the address after noting the school’s full accreditation and praising the music program and overall improvements. Ruth Zeller sang solo. diplomas were presented by Supt. J. S. Noffsinger.
