Soldiers fired a volley over the grave of Chrystal Witzel as Ralph Cross sounded taps. The cemetery service ends with the national anthem and a line of march reforms to town. A half hour band concert in the business district draws a vast crowd.
The Illinois Agricultural Association filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission to push for lower grain and hay freight rates for Illinois in carloads. The brief argues Illinois, a top grain producer, should receive the same Western State rates enacted January 1. It reflects months of research and farmer testimony and statistics.
The Ashton Candy Shop launched in the Roesler building this Saturday. Proprietor Steve Anagnos reports strong patronage and music by Wisman's Novelty Orchestra. A large room behind the shop will host dancing next Saturday and he thanks the community for support.
A Chicago mailed letter from December 26, 1913 lay in a post office box for 80 years. It contained a ten dollar check tied to a final settlement on a shipment of sheep.
Friday the Ashton band will travel to Mt Morris for the homecoming celebration where the Kable Bros. band dedicates a $2 500 band stand. Bands from Ashton Milledgeville Leaf River and Forreston are invited to assist. Many Ashton residents plan to join, and Mt Morris promises ample entertainment and a rewarding visit.
The Ashton Post No 345 will hold a regular meeting in the Odd Fellows club room this Thursday evening at 8 oclock All members are urged to attend to discuss the upcoming picnic scheduled for June 1st By order of the commander.
For those considering buying cemetery lots, secretary R. B. Charters will be at Ashton Cemetery on Friday afternoon June 2 from 2 to 8 30 o clock to discuss purchases.
A Thursday afternoon rainstorm caused extensive flood damage in Reynolds Township and nearby areas. Fields suffered washed-out corn and six inch soil deposits, fences toppled, and farmers faced replanting. William Ewald farm water tank floated from its foundation as Lincoln Highway travelers reported a foot of water on the road.
Volume 1 Number 1 announces the Lee County Farm News published by the Lee County Farm Bureau and printed by Amboy News. The 4 page semi monthly paper will replace circular letters for members and offers a 50 cent yearly subscription to members plus one dollar for non members.
Washington reports that after July pensioners on the government roll will receive pensions monthly instead of quarterly. The House agreed to Senate amendments to the bill, benefiting most pensioners and preventing deaths before quarterly payments.
Dr J B Carlson of La Salle announces a visit to Dr Hanawalt's office to fit glasses and sell porch screens. A complete carpenter shop is available for window work and prompt service. The hours are 9:00 am to 3:00 pm or as noted by Hussey & Son at Franklin Grove.
A suspected auto thieves headquarters near Eldena yielded seven Ford cars recovered by Monday and moved to Dixon city hall. Some vehicles were stored in Dix lon garages rented by Y O Gorek owner of the Eldena farm, whose tale of a Peoria trade from Hutchinson fell apart as more cars surfaced. Investigations spread to Peoria authorities while owners remain elusive. Semester exams begin next week as former students return for vacations. senior play tickets go on sale and a recent Junior-Senior reception featured a bird bath gift from Carl Stephan.
Mount Morris prepares a reunion for Rock River Seminary and Mount Morris College alumni on Wednesday and Thursday with commencement Friday morning and Home Coming activities Friday afternoon and evening including a band contest with Leaf River Milledgeville Ashton and Forreston entries a House of David baseball game against Polo a grotesque rag tag parade theater by the American Legion Quartet Teck-Gandner Company Rochelle and a concert by Kable Brothers. Saturday features regular night concerts continuing through summer as the Mount Morris band under Prof Francis A Myers performs atop a new shell shaped band stand on the college campus with comfortable seating and improved players.
At a Saturday meeting the Board of Local Improvements voted to reject all paying bids submitted last week. The new bid setting date is Tuesday June 18 at 10 AM. The Gazette carries the legal notice. The move follows an irregular lowest bid and after consulting their attorney Mark Keller the board decided to re-advertise.
Henry Hinz and family express gratitude to the people of Ashton for the many acts of kindness shown during their recent bout with smallpox.

A wash-out on the C R L and P near LaSalle last Friday evening derailed a train, killing engineer Charles Damm of Blue Island. Damm had over twenty years on the Rock Island line. Fireman Johnson escaped injury. Damm’s wife, formerly Gertie Coleman, had ties to the local community. Heavy rains caused the wash-out affecting the tracks two miles east of LaSalle.
