Memorial Day Observances Include Veterans Tribute and School Parade

Decoration Day ceremonies in Ashton drew about 1000 attendees with old soldiers, the Lafayette band, and students marching to the cemetery to lay flowers on graves of departed heroes. Rev W A Schutte lauded veterans, Theodore Roosevelt and Grand Army of the Republic in a German address. Washington Grove also honored thirty two fallen heroes with services and cemetery tributes. A legislature bill to require five day pre election school board ticket preparation drew praise from Amboy News. An advertisement for music lessons ends the report.

Golden State Letter Describes Southern California Pleasures

A 1908 letter from R L Sholty, associate editor of the Gazette, extols Los Angeles and southern California as a perpetual vacation playground. Ashton High School Beats Dixon In Open Baseball Clash

A large crowd watched Ashton High School defeat Dixon 16 to 10 in a Decoration Day game. Dixon later sent their South Side High School team to face Ashton, but the locals again prevailed 20 to 9. Key hitters included Geo Stephan with two two base hits and a three base hit, and Arthur Simpson and W H Bates with home runs. Attendance around 125 for the Dixon game and 300 for the Ashton versus Married Men game with receipts of 22.50.
