The piece highlights religious influence, water scarcity, military posts, and an emerging Mexican agricultural push with new irrigation, crops, and markets.
The Ashton Gazette notes Sabbath services resume July 29 with Sunday School at 9:30 Epworth League 6:30 and Preaching 7:30 under the Anti-Saloon League. Geo F Conger assistant state Superintendent will speak. This is a union effort of church against the saloon. All interested urged to attend.
Large crowds from Ashton Gate and surrounding counties attend the final day of the camp meeting at Franklin Grove. Receipts total 1266 from boarding, gate, rent. grounds praised as Nickey plans new cottages for next year’s silver anniversary. Religious services run Tuesday to Thursday with ministers Odgers Williams Parks Abel Tompkins Bennet Slaughter leading talks and sermons.
The report covers sermons and topics at the Bible school and Epworth League. Odgers spoke on The Church at Antioch, Bennet delivered the annual Epworth League address using Romans 14:11, and district officers were elected including President George Miller and Treasurer Charles Hollister.

Postmaster General Cortelyou rescinds the old rule requiring rural route patrons to buy from listed manufacturers. Beginning August 1 patrons may construct their own mail boxes if they meet department standards for size durability safety and weather protection. Boxes must display Approved by the postmaster general and the route office approval. In other news a chapter of the Eastern Star was organized in the Masonic Hall with about fifty attendees from Dixon. O B Anderson assisted, and The Athena will be the chapter name with charter details forthcoming.
A large amount of interest is being taken and the organization will probably grow rapidly. Harry Wisman and family returned Monday evening from a trip to St. Charles.
The council studies a North Hotel to cemetery sidewalk project covering 1049 feet between the railroad and cemetery entrance. Four feet wide totaling 4196 square feet, with a stone wall 170 feet one side and 230 the other, crushed rock under gravel and sand, Billmire steel bridge over the stream, cement girders to form an uninterrupted walk. Ashton township adds 692 feet and the town 355 feet, the division about 72 feet north of the culvert, cement work by Chas. Tuck, weather last week allowed completion of township portion. town work begun.
The council plans a new walk starting from the Commercial Hotel and running two blocks north. If approved, it will be laid soon after the existing path is finished.
