Chief William B. Farrer and Deputy George H. VanNess led a chase after a fast fleeing negro who dodged through cornfields east of town, aided by volunteers. The man had stolen an empty dinner basket from Martin Krug near the flag shanty at Brown avenue crossing, while deputies faced muddy ditches and a chilly bath.
Officers and teachers chosen for 1913 at Ashton Bradford and Reynolds Sunday schools include H M Kersten as superintendent, Emma Heibenthal, Rosa Stephan, and W C Yenerich among teachers and organizers. Mrs J N Rogers dies at 73, with funeral details noted in Malta Record.
The paper lists new subscribers Adelia Maddux of Chicago and Paul Kelly of Sterling, plus renewals from locals such as Jacob Van Ness Ashton III and C. J. Cordes Oregon Ill. C. S. Kron has purchased the restaurant business of Paul Kelly and took possession last Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Kelly left Tuesday for Davenport to visit relatives. They will start work at the Gulf house in Sterling today. Kelly ran the establishment here for four years.
Revival services begin Sunday evening at 7 30 at United Evangelical Church and continue nightly next week. Pastor Rev Geo A Walter will preach. Presbyterian services next Sunday evening at the usual hour with Rev WM White of Chicago preaching.
Last evening the annual installation of officers for Ashton Lodge No. 531 A F and A M for 1913 was held. S T Zeller Jr Past Master and L T Moore Marshall conducted the ceremonies. Fred Schafer was struck by a cow at the Andrew Butler farm sale last Friday. He was knocked unconscious, suffered head and back bruises, and did not regain consciousness until midnight. He recovered enough by Saturday to return home five miles south of town, with his condition improving. George B. Stephan showcases a grand new display window at his furniture store, drawing wide praise for its design and illumination.
