In 1913 Ashton spent about 125000 on permanent improvements in the locality, the best year on record for the village. 1914 promises similar growth with plans for many new residences and strong building activity. The town, once the fastest growing in Lee County, also saw prosperous merchants and a boom in postal outgoing mail.
Miss Anna Klingebiel formerly of this city wed Christmas to John H. Emmert of Dixon. Lillian C. Smith will marry William Sachs at three this afternoon in Reynolds township home of her parents. Ceremony by Rev. F Theiss under an arch with pink carnations and silvered oak leaves. Mendelssohn march played by Mrs. Henry C. Smith. Flower girls Violet Smith and Lillie Breich. Dress white messaline with beads and lace. bouquet of roses. A wedding dinner for relatives follows served by four waitresses Anna Heimhaweh and Adna Heimhaweh Me.
United Evangelical Sunday Schools choose officers and teachers for 1914. Ashton officers include Superintendent H M Kersten and Luella Schafer as assistant, with John A Kersten as secretary and Celestia Kersten as pianist. Bradford slate names Columbus Roberts as superintendent and Mattie Hart as organist, with Lawrence Hart as assistant and Amelia Hann as librarian.
Mrs Mary Ellen Woods died Sunday evening at 9 at her home in Bradford township. She was born in Ohio fifty one years ago on Christmas Day. She was married and lived in Delavan before moving here. Her husband died four years ago. She is survived by two sons and a daughter at home.
Funeral services for Ruader of Bloomington were held at the Methodist Episcopal church with interment in Ashton cemetery. The Pastime theatre opened last Saturday to large crowds. Epworth League musical at the church drew modest attendance and nearly $10 was raised. Chicago and Cook county face jobless questions as winter looms, with Indiana regions similar. A car of Studebaker autos arrived this week. Mrs. J. B. Smith visited Chicago. Hunters may obtain state hunting and fishing laws books from the village clerk.
State Consul J W Corkings of the Lincoln Highway association appoints Frank S Hart of Ashton as local consul to oversee the route from near Franklin Grove through the city to Ogle county. Hart, enthusiastic about the road, seeks citizen cooperation and notes potential annual traffic of 25 000 vehicles with four passengers each, possibly rising to 100 000 travellers stopping to buy goods boosting local business. Dixon, Farmers, and Ogle County Telephone Companies adopt paid tolls to comply with the Utilities law effective today. Ashton to Dixon and Rochelle tolls set at five cents, with five cent tolls to Dixon area and adjacent counties, minimum ten cents. Free exchange within listed towns, aims to reduce lengthy visits and busy lines, improving promptness for business calls.
