Reverend Peter G Smith Called Beyond to Ashton

Peter G Smith a licensed Methodist preacher born June 13 1821 Indiana spent early life there. He married Sarah Stayton in 1840 and fathered twelve children seven living. Licensed 1874 ordained 1875 and did pioneer work in Indiana Iowa Kansas Illinois. He moved to Ashton Illinois in 1863 and later resided with his son in Waterloo Iowa. The Ashton Times noted his departure and reverence from the local church.

Ashton Loses Longtime Public Figure Squire Smith Passes

Public notices record the death of Squire Smith of Ashton a respected former justice of the peace and police magistrate who led an honest Christian life. He spent his last years with his son E M Smith of Waterloo and later with his daughter Mrs Peter Larson of Southside leaving seven children and a town with a vacancy in leadership.

Evangelist Miller Draws Crowds in City Streets

Mrs Letty Larson Mrs E M Smith and Allen Smith mourn the passing of a church saint Rev F W Hitt and Evangelist O A Miller lead crowded services. Miller, a Chicago native, directs with organ piano and guitar accompaniment. He and his solo work draw growing attendance as he guides the congregation in song. Tax Books Open as Wm Schade Collects AshfH

Tax Collector Wm Schade has opened the tax books for AshfH and is processing assessments. The state tax this year rises while overall collections stay similar to last year with total funds allocated across state, county, town, road and bridge, court use bonds, corporate, gas bonds and school funds. Noted local notes include Uncle George Schaffer’s Friday butcher job and Bert Todd renting John Kilmer’s farm with plans to move soon.

Engine No 1080 Tire Break on Fast Train No 6

Saturday morning the engine No 1080 pulling fast train No 6 broke a tire on a drive wheel. Two rails were also broken but no further damage occurred and a lucky escape followed. Fast mail No 10 trailing the passenger took the train into the city.
