Frank C. Lowden is poised for the Republican nomination for Illinois governor in the September 13 primary. The candidate is presented as a principled, active public servant with a long record in Congress and state politics, praised for his campaigns and steady leadership.
Dixon Elks stage the seventh annual Clam Bake and Chicken Fry on Labor Day at Adelheid Park featuring top Chicago cabaret acts, wrestling matches, and a four hour show with a large buffet including chowder, clams, pig, veal, chicken, potatoes, beans, and bread. Concerts, a large chorus, and orchestras rehearse across Lee County with souvenir programs to be sold at the event. Rev. T. E. Stevens returns to preach September 3 at the local Presbyterian church.
The choirs of the Presbyterian United Evangelical and Methodist churches will rehearse Thursday evening at the Methodist church for the Sunday school Festival at Assembly Park in Dixon. Mrs. F. D. Labhman of Franklin Grove visited Ashton Tuesday.
Information reached town of the death of Harry Coleman, about 22, who had worked for Raymond Hood west of town since February. Details are unavailable, location of the accident unknown, and his mother in Union Bridge Maryland awaits confirmation. Coleman left for the west last Thursday morning in search of work.
Miss Gertrude A Fell and Mr. R John Absher of Dixon were united in marriage by Rev Fred A Graham at the bride’s mother’s home with five guests. After a rice shower they left for Creston and Chicago returning Monday. The bride, daughter of the late Alonzo Fell, has long lived in Ashton. the groom is an educator, principal at Sublette, and formerly Ashton grammar teacher. They will reside in Ashton with Mr Absher continuing school duties.

Dr H L Basford spent the weekend in Chicago and the family plans to move to Ashton next week to occupy a new house. John M Krug touts two race horses Clandestine won at Burlington IA and Bertha Creighton won at Evansville WI. Sisters Marcella and Burkmans of Clinton IA visit Joseph A Roesler’s family. Mrs George Beinlein and son George of Clinton also visit. The mayor warns motorists to obey speed and light laws or arrests will follow. Miss Elma Faber broke her right forearm falling from a bicycle. Miss Josephine Hunt and friends Ruth Bowen and Ortha Lane visit and plan vacation at Lake Geneva WI. Mrs George R Charters learns of nephew Dr Leonard Blue’s death in Albany NY. he was a Methodist delegate. George B Dean, Clarence Dean and families, and Frank Dean’s group visited the editor in LaMoille, as Frank Dean leaves to join Ohio University.
The Lee County Soil Improvement Association and Farmers Elevator of Franklin Grove announce a big picnic at the camp meeting grounds in Franklin Grove on Friday September 1. Dr John W Cook president of DeKalb State Normal will give the annual address with speakers William G Eckhart and L B Griffith. A music program and free lemonade will accompany the event. Miss Minnie Wagner visited relatives in the area yesterday.
At a Board of Louy Improvements meeting contracts were signed with John M. Egan Jr. for the city sewer system and disposal plant. Machinery has arrived and crews are unloading. Egan plans to begin Monday morning at the southeast corner site, with both machines in use for rapid progress.
Labor Day excursion from Chicago to a Wisconsin resort with fishing canoeing sailing and camping. Depart Friday Sept 1, return Tuesday morning for business. Reservations through Chicago and North Western Ry Ticket Agents. Lafayette Hires An Instructor Charles Drummond, longtime musical instructor and former Lafayette Band leader, will teach the boys. A son was born Tuesday to Mr and Mrs Faust H Boyd.
