Auspicious End for Big Rock River Chautauqua Assembly

The Dixon Rock River Chautauqua closes its twenty third annual session with 5000 plus visitors, record campers around 1300, and the strongest program yet. Attendances peaked near ten thousand on August 6 with Mme Schumann Heink and other stars, while plans already begin for 1911 and next summer's Bible Conference and Missionary Convention.

Old Settlers Picnic to Be Held in Compton

The Lee County Old Settlers picnic is set for Thursday August 25 in Compton. Chairman Edward Bennett directs preparations for a large local turnout with States Attorney Harry Edwards delivering the afternoon address. Mrs May Scott arrived from Chicago Saturday to visit Charles Trainer and his daughter.

Judge Scott Courted Voters In Lee County Run

Judge Robert H. Scott visited Ashton on Saturday to discuss his candidacy for re election as Lee County judge. He cites eight years in county affairs and a steady record, noting voters will weigh experience and service before voting.

Tourtillott enters race for 35th district seat

Sheriff A T Tourtillott of Dixon visits Ashton in support of his candidacy for Representative from the 35th Senatorial district. Known as Major Tourtillott he is praised for four years as Lee County sheriff, his farm life in Sublette, and service in the Illinois National Guard including the Spanish war. He has long Republican ties and local public service roles.

Macadam Road Contract Awarded for Local Road

Highway Commissioners met at the Town Hall on Tuesday morning and awarded the rock crushing contract to Earl Howey. The project links the new road to the existing hard road southeast of town, funded by the previously approved $1,000 from last spring. B Albrecht visited Dixon yesterday.

Gray Winning High Way in District

The 35th senatorial district with Whiteside, Lee and De Kalb counties sees growing support for Dr. J. H. Gray of Morrison as state senator. The Morrison Sentinel notes Whiteside’s claim to a seat and that Republicans broadly back Gray, praising his prior service and incorruptible character. Also listed are two property deeds and a note of Wesley Yenerich visiting Rochelle.

Former Citizen Dies While Preparing for the Fair

George J. Schmidt a longtime resident of this city and Laurens Town died Sunday at his Laurens home at sixty eight. Born in Germany he came to Armories at age 24 and worked as a farm hand in Reynolds township. He served three terms as Ashton mayor in 1895 1897 and 1898. The Lee County Fair Association announces plans for September 20 23 with Children’s Day admission free for under twelve and purses totaling over 1400. The fairgrounds will host tents for exhibits on a leased ten acre site near Green River Park. Attendees urged to promote and attend the event. The Amboy News notes additional fair features and a visit from relatives Richard and Thomas Griffith of Columbus Ohio.

State Senator John C. McKenzie of Elizabeth Jo Daviess County seeks the congressional seat to succeed Col Frank O Lowden. He will speak tomorrow evening after a band concert in the business district. Teachers Annual Institute to Be Held in Amboy

The Lee county teachers institute runs Monday August 22 through August 26 in Amboy. Superintendent I F Edwards has secured top instructors and expects large attendance. P A Downey of Cook County lectures on school management reading and arithmetic. E I Philbrook of Rock Island on music. Miss Frances Jenkein of Decatur leads talks on beginning reading and storytelling art. Some attendees may renew certificates without examination. Henry Messer visited Dixon on Tuesday.

Tragic threshing accident claims Roy Cross in Ogle County

Roy Cross, 22, fatally injured when a threshing separator wheels ran over his head during a move between farms in southern Ogle County. He died twelve hours later at about 11 PM. Funeral held Saturday at Washington Grove Christian church with large attendance. Cross was the son of John Cross, assistant county superintendent of schools, and left a wife and two children.
