The Lee county annual report to Springfield records 1915 figures with $163,575 school tax levy and $91,800 bonded indebtedness. Enrollment totals reach 5,356 with 261 eighth grade graduations and 125 high school graduates. Women teachers earned $100,636.63 in salaries, total expenditures hit $191,824.49 and cash on hand is $71,915.51.
A Louisville Courier Journal daily thought notes the public servant would not resign under fire while contrasting domestic service. A Stevenson quote adds that entertainment quality correlates with generosity, offering multiple reasons why the world seems dull to dull people.
A column notes the world has seen 60 years of uninterrupted peace in 3,000 years. It reports Modern Woodmen of America issuing 44,573 certificates since January 1 1915, with five months left to surpass 1914 totals. Other items cover weather, hunting license rules, local oiling of streets, and residents traveling to Dixon and Moorhead.
J C Griffith directs Ashton township efforts for the Lee County Soil Improvement Association as memberships surge with 40 per township. The group, funded for three years with $10 yearly dues, will employ a soil expert and receive federal aid. W D Knapp and M N Glenn assist, with many members not farmers.
Bruce Lux seven year old son of Mr and Mrs Charles A Lux died at Lincoln hospital from burns suffered at a North Rochelle avenue bonfire. He was struck when gasolene on the fire flashed to a tin cup thrown by an older brother. Mrs Lux burned while trying to help. Dr Stevens treated him before transport to the hospital where he died.
Reynolds Woman's Missionary society meets Thursday at 2 0 o'clock at Mrs. Herman Kersten's home. Teachers Training class program August 15 at 7 45 p.m. Rev O O Lozier will speak. Freeport Camp Meeting August 19 to 29 with conventions for Sunday school and Young Peoples Alliance. Delegates from Reynolds include Miss Della Neuman and Lydia Sandrock. Clara Koch and Edna Walter for the Alliance. Naperville Park hosts Young Peoples Alliance convention August 19 to 22. Miss Della Neuman is Reynolds delegate. Wedding anniversary gifts by year list provided.
Survivors of the Grand Army announce their annual reunion at Rock River Assembly on August 17-18, 1915. The gathering will include veterans from the Army of the Potomac units and all who served from Bull Run to Appomattox, meeting in Bible Hall at 9 a.m. August 18. Please bring a burnable top rail for the event.
Slain art critic Harry K. Thaw visited Ashton on Saturday morning riding a Packard with Ex-Congressman D. S. Wharton and others. They dined in Dixon and toured the Assembly and Camp Dunne before planning to stay the night in Clinton. Light crew work on the water tower line was completed with praise for Charles Hunter. Mrs. W. H. Bates and daughter visited DeKalb homes Tuesday and yesterday.
