Civil War veteran Charles E. Trainer dies at 74
Charles E. Trainer, a Gettysburg survivor and veteran who served in the 60th New York Infantry, died August 2 at his Ashton area home after a nine week illness. He was 74 and had lived in Illinois since 1866, married Emily Plantz in 1867, and survived by a son John E and three daughters with seven grandchildren and three sisters. Interment was in Ashton Cemetery after a funeral at the Methodist Church, with a eulogy by A. W. Rosecrans.

David Kelley who for about three months led the electric service for Ashton and Franklin Grove Utilities has left. He will transfer to Dixon where his family lives and desires to reside. Glenn R. Wright of Franklin Grove succeeds him, starting August 1, in Dixon duties for the company.

Northwestern Earnings Hold Steady Amid Expansion Plans
Northwestern finished its fiscal year June 30 with earnings about ten percent on common stock, up from 8.20 percent last year and well above earlier years. A May surplus of 15,219,896 dollars could fund eight percent dividends on preferred stock and leave 8.62 percent on outstanding common stock. Expansion via the St. Louis Peoria North-Western line launches October 1 to access Illinois coal. Meanwhile post office shifts include a new twelve-cent stamp replacing the thirteen-cent stamp as registry and international rates rise. a fifteen-cent stamp could cover registry and international postage. Lewis Wood Placed on Pension After 44 Years of Service
Lewis Wood, a Chicago and Northwestern railways veteran, is placed on the pension list after forty four years of continual service. He joined in March 1869 as yard master, never missed a day, and helped with heavy freight. At 67, he retires amid well wishers from Galena division friends. Also two Iowa farm bargains: 362 acre stock and grain farm near Des Moines for $125/acre, and 2011 T. A. Epson listing in Woodward Iowa offering 125 and 145 acre tracts.

Council Posts August Bills and Main Street Work
