Death on Farm Scaffold Kills John H. Kersten
John H. Kersten died instantly when a scaffold collapsed under extra weight from heavy rafters during a barn erection west of town. High winds contributed to danger as carpenters worked with Will Fuchs Henry Zimple Laurent Henry and Will Haenitch assisting. Coroner summoned a verdict of accidental death from scaffold failure and falling lumber. The 61 year old Reynolds Township resident left a wife two children and a church community mourning his loss. Interment was in Ashton cemetery with services at the nearby Methodist church.

Scarlet Fever Abates in Ashton After Brief Outbreak
Scarlet fever in Ashton appears to abate with no new cases since last Saturday. Nine houses remain in quarantine but only slight cases persist, and one more member in a household has fallen ill. The health committee closed churches lodges theatres and public meetings and plans to lift restrictions Thursday if no new cases appear. Boy Scouts Bicycle Trip Stages Through Ashton on Way to Davenport
Scoutmaster Walter and twelve members of Troop 92 Irving Park Chicago stopped in Ashton Monday morning during their cross country bicycle trip to Davenport Town. Thirteen riders left Chicago Saturday. one rider returned by train after a broken valve. They rode 42 miles to Geneva on Saturday and to Rochelle Sunday, dining at DeKalb. The group travels during school vacation with a 50 cent daily budget for a five dollar total trip.
