In Memoriam Hartman Kersten Died Friday

Obituary for Hartman Kersten a longtime resident with funeral at Reynolds Church on Easter Sunday. Born January 2 1836 in Machtlos Germany he immigrated to Illinois in 1855 and lived a devout Christian life as a Sabbath School teacher and church leader. Survived by wife Elizabeth and nine children with twenty three grandchildren, community mourns his counsel and teaching. He died after a period of cancer calmly accepting God’s will.

Small Pox Stop Spreads Amid Quarantine Evasion

No new small pox cases have developed in the act classing. Three patients sick with the disease in the city are improving and three have recovered. De Kalb resident Charles E. Johnson, previously exposed, was discharged by the board of health and left for DeKalb after settling with authorities with a $450 judgement note and pledged property.

Will Teach at Steward Public School

Professor F D Chadwick will join Steward Public School after two successful years at Lee High School. The Lee Standard notes the loss to readers but the gain for Steward and praises his hard work and proven record as a first class educator.

Pension Granted to Harry Wisman for Spanish American War Service

Harry Wisman has received government pension papers. He will receive six dollars per month and nine months back pay. Wisman served in Porto Rico during the Spanish American War with Company G of the 6th Illinois Volunteers.

Sheep Shearing Boom At Zel ler Yards Lifts Rural Trade

The Zeiler Yards begin rapid sheep shearing with about 2000 sheep to be handled daily by three men and a gasoline-driven machine. Lambs fetch seven cents and ewes phi cents, as owners moving stock to market expect strong wool demand in Western states.

Farmers' Telephone adds 100 drop switchboard in Ashton

The Farmers' Telephone Company installed a 100 drop Stromberg Carlson switchboard, boosting capacity to 200 drops with the older unit. With 275 subscribers now and 25 more expected by May, Ashton aims to provide near by drops, weather reports, and improved service, needing two operators as calls reach 1,000 daily.
