Governors Tour Boosts Lincoln Highway Good Roads Day

Governor Edward F. Dunne arrives in Ashton escorted by 15 autos carrying about 75 residents. The town decorates Main Street as Dunne touts the Road Law and Illinois road improvements, with speeches by N A Petrie and a notable Illinois highway delegation. The trip continues to Dixon and Sterling with local car escorts and reporters aboard.

Voters Cast Ballots in City and Franklin Grove Elections

In the city election about 144 votes were cast with three women voting. Scratched ballots were common and two ballots were rejected for defects. Christ Kurth and three others ran for village trustees while Ralph J. Dean won village clerk and Martin Hewert led as police magistrate with 93 to 81 for C K Northrup. At Franklin Grove four tickets competed as Frank D. Kelley M V Peterson and E B Lott won board seats, A B Wicker became village clerk, with 127 men and 65 women voting.

Senior class play The Sweet Girl Graduates at Opera House

The Senior class stages The Sweet Girl Graduates at the opera house on Friday evening May 1. The cast includes Miss Maude De Smythe and Marie Strube with Gladys Wagner Ernest Kersten Maud Knapp Valeria Reynolds Katherine Iva Linscott Esther Durston Mr Chinese Bulbus and J Christie Klingebiel. A line invites audiences to see Matilda the ever hopeful old maid and Mrs De Smythe’s antics. A baby born Monday to Mr and Mrs Calvin Thomas.

Council Considers Oil on Ashton Streets

A special Ashton city council meeting reviewed a citizens petition to oil all streets. The improvement committee to oversee work, estimate 900 to 1000 dollars, three oil cars needed, funded from general taxes, and expected for summer dusty streets.

Funeral held for Eliza J. Cummins longtime Lafayette settler

Eliza Jane Paddock Cummins died at 77 years old at her sister Mrs. David M. Billmire’s home in this city. Born October 4 1886 in Vigo county Indiana she moved to Illinois in 1837 with her parents settling near Washington Grove Ogle county. She married Joseph Cummins November 1 1855 and had one child who died in infancy. She was a charter member of the Washington Grove Christian church and is survived by two of ten siblings, including Mrs. Billmire and Mrs. F. E. Self. Funeral Tuesday at 2 PM from the Billmire home conducted by Rev. Fremont McCague.

Correction on Eisenberg house delay attribution
