Sewing girls trea d in the surf at Rockaway Beach
The Columbia steamship brought 1800 sewing girls to Rockaway where they wore simple flannel sacks and funnel trousers as they entered dressing rooms, then bathed in the strong surf. Spectators watched as waves tangled gowns and mischief from playful surfers and beachgoers added to the scene in lively shore action.
