A Springfield reader laments over a flood of erotic chromos in the New York Observer. The piece sketches the temptation they pose, debates framing or disposal, and ends with a decision to resist burning them. The narrator frets over preserving decorum while a husband mocks the dilemma.
A varied compilation recounts domestic scenes with a stern, moral undertone, the discovery of ancient artifacts and mummies in Ecuador, and notices on settlers in Nebraska. It also includes odd anecdotes from Cincinnati séances and miscellaneous moralizing tips on frugal finances, gun safety, and social curiosities.
A New York arrival, Jose Urtudo Tapia, brings a vast collection of Mexican and Central American antiquities from Palenque. The pieces include stone idols, masks of jade and marble, gold ornaments, pottery, and carved portraits, some dating back 20,000 years. The centerpiece is a two foot tall porphyry idol depicting a feathered serpent with a female figure emerging from its coils, linked to the god Quetzalcoatl.
