Kleinstaber Elected On County Canvas Count

Primary election results show tight races across the county. Eckle and Kleinstieber tied for sheriff, McCloud defeats Dillon by 90 votes, Chapple over Berg by 122, Yankee leads with a 343 vote majority over Mrs. Archibald. Democrats reportedly voted Republican at the primaries in a hard fought contest.

Ellis Fisher Dies Former Bank Teller and Political Chairman

Ellis Fisher longtime Ashland resident and former receiving teller of the Northern National Bank died at his home after several months illness. He chaired the Democratic County Committee and was active in politics. Funeral held Wednesday at Mt Hope cemetery with Rev. Morris officiating in Ironwood.

Village School Opens With 150 Pupils On First Day

Last Monday the public schools in the village opened with 150 pupils enrolled on the first day. Teachers listed include Principal C Mulrine and staff for Seventh to Eighth grades Clem entine Doublander, Fifth and Sixth Irma Room, Second to Fourth Kate Carlson, First and Primary Marie Gatchy, Music and Drawing Ruth Andrews. The school aims to secure top talent and has shown progress under Principal Malrine.

Labor Day Parade Draws Large Crowd in Ashland

Labor Day celebration in Ashland drew crowds from surrounding towns and was considered a success. The morning wind nearly postponed events but by nine o clock the weather cleared and a strong program proceeded though balloon ascension was canceled. The city hailed one of its best celebrations yet ahead of the Ashland County Fair in September.

Accident narrowly averted on Second Street

An automobile from Bayfield started on the wrong side of Second Street near the Lenox hotel and, while attempting a turn, struck a motorcycle rider in front of it. The rider was thrown to the pavement but escaped injury. The car owner was new to Ashland and unfamiliar with local traffic rules.

Sanborn Postoffice Robbed by Yeggmen Blower

Sanborn postoffice was broken into and robbed last Wednesday night with the safe blown open. Thieves escaped with a small booty and fled along the south shore track. Sheriff Dormany searched the area but no clues to the burglars were found.

The Bai River Reservation survey will be completed by July 1 1917 after earlier reports of possible abandonment. Underwood says the tract is among the northwest’s largest with fertile soils and clay near, promising a major Wisconsin farm center. Redfield and Gunderson have left, leaving Underwood as allotting agent. road access remains the main barrier to cultivation.

Four camps to be opened by J S Stearns Lumber Co at Odanah

The J S Stearns Lumber Co of Odanah plans to operate four camps this coming winter with several more to be added in October. Logging will rush to finish the timber cut on the reservation, possibly within four to five years, with white pine and hardwoods dominating. The long wait for tan bark slows thr log work, but a double shift may start once more railroad camps are active.

Fire Scare at Kamm's Garage Near City Hall

Yesterday noon a blaze nearly broke out at Kamm's Garage near the city hall. A red hot automobile spring was placed into a pail of oil during tempering, starting a quick flare that was controlled by firemen with no damage reported. Car owners hurried to remove autos from the building.

Bad Mixup at Odanah Monday

Indian Police clashed with two young Indian boys in Odanah Monday evening following a government farmer's office listing incident. One boy suffered a head injury from a police club and required medical aid. They were jailed, brought before Judge Skottestad, and fined. case pending in municipal court next Tuesday.
