Jubilee charity critique spans two reigns and two jubilees
The author contrasts Victoria's diamond jubilee with Edward VII’s coronation, noting London’s four hundred thousand beggars starved while wealth funded spectacle. Lipton’s twenty five thousand rescued subsistence on Jubilee day, while the public spent about one million on viewing seats. The piece calls for social reform and universal welfare beyond church charity and political liberalism.
