In Timaru on October 17, Charles Darcy aged eighteen was fined 205 and costs 6a or fourteen days hard labour for stealing a bridle from a private stable. He claimed to have found the bridle on the roadside a month earlier but did not seek to locate the owner, and the Magistrate said his action was tantamount to theft reflecting a poor record.
Flotsam found in Oruawharo Bay on Great Barrier Island includes a barnacled American pine plank likely from a carpenter's head aboard a vessel. West Coast wreckage also reported thirty miles south of Caps Maria, featuring an 11 inch diameter spar about fifty feet long, a partially preserved bow, red hematite paint, white bow accents, and a split flag resembling Union Jack and dark blue.
